HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -– A lifeguard recovered nine California Brown Pelicans on Monday, after the endangered birds washed up on shore with intentionally broken wings at Bolsa Chica Beach.
Seven of the birds were dead at the scene, and by Wednesday, another lifeguard rescued two more pelicans with broken wings. Three of the birds had to be euthanized, Lisa Brinkle, assistant wildlife director at the Wetlands Wildlife Care Center in Huffington Beach, said.
While other media reports stated 11 birds were found with broken wings, U.S. Fish and Wildlife detective Lisa Nickels says only eight birds have been reported.
