Storm Post-Ike Animal Rescue

Post-Ike Animal Rescue, Reunion Efforts Continue
9/27/08

Quote:
HOUSTON -- Hurricane Ike hit Texas two weeks ago, but the storm continues to rain down on animal rescue efforts in the Galveston and Houston area.
The Houston Humane Society's lack of electricity recently forced it to halt its adoption program, despite its current overload of almost 1,000 displaced animals.

Group gives refuge to Ike's tiny survivors

Quote:
HOUSTON — Residents are finding tiny refugees in the leafy debris left behind by Hurricane Ike: baby squirrels. More than 1,000 of them, some less than 3 inches long, have been brought to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which has set up the equivalent of a squirrel neonatal unit.
"We're feeding them puppy formula every three hours," said Sharon Schmalz, executive director of the society's Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center.
