Starving Horses: Surviving the Winter

Starving Horses: Surviving the Winter
Quote:
Two horses are still at the vet and slowing recovering, said Vet Jay Stewart. The other nine horses are on foster farms. Two temporarily belong to Kim Chollar. She and her husband own a farm near St. Libory with six horses of their own. She said the horses are doing well, but she's nervous for the winter.
It takes horses much longer to put on weight than people, because these horses are down more than 200 pounds. They should normally weigh about 1,200 pounds, Chollar said. She believes it will take them six months to a year to get back to a normal weight. The biggest problem is that's it's almost impossible for horses to gain weight in the winter because they're already using up extra calories to stay warm, Chollar said.
