Overpopulation of Deer

Deer overpopulation is a serious problem
10/23/08
Portsmouth Herald News, NH
Quote:
Southern Maine has a serious overpopulation of whitetail deer. There are more than four times the numbers of deer the habitat can support.
Normal populations of deer should number 20 to 25 per square mile. Coastal communities in southern Maine have over 100 deer crowded into a square mile.
After coastal deer have eaten the natural browse of summer they proceed to eat people's ornamental shrubs and less nutritious foods.
Biologists are concerned that deer they are sampling have small skeletal bones and low fat reserves. The deer are producing fewer young compared to healthy deer in other locations. This is not natural.

Around here, urban hunting is mostly frowned upon, but several communities hire sharpshooters to "cull" the population...and the meat goes to homeless shelters from what I understand.

Alot of people don't agree with it...inhumane, blah, blah...but as someone that doesn't hunt or own a gun, I understand and appreciate it.

If they weren't culled they would starve . Some states have brought in coyotes which is better culling because they usually get the weaker ones .

Theres NO doubt that they need to be thinned.

This late summer they had sharp shooters come in and work some of the big parks up here.

It did cut down on the deer/car accidents a bit.

In Wisconsin, the Coyote and Wolf populations are increasing slightly, which will help some. We do have a problem with chronic wasting disease here, but people still get out there and hunt a lot. Bow season is already rolling, and gun deer season starts around turkey day.
