Absolutely! Unless you are in the business of breeding cats or dogs, there is no reason not to have it done. All of my pets are except the newest cat. He has finally mellowed out enough to where I will take him in for that soon. He had belonged to people that had no business having pets of any kind, so it took him awhile to even allow someone to pet him without freaking out, never mind picking him up!

All three of my dogs are neutered. It's the responsible thing to do in my opinion.

Well both my cats have been fixed ..... but not my dog..... I was thinking of breeding one set of pups with her ..but as i look at her little face i dont think i could sell or give those pups away... I know my BF and daughter would say OH they are not staying and me being me ......... so after christmas i will get her done to then i dont have to worry about her getting out ...... there are to many animals in shelters or left on the streets to fend for themselves ..... not to .....

Well, I guess I'm somewhat of a hypocrit here, but I agree -- spay or neuter.

I admit, though, that I have never had any of our guinea pigs "fixed". Aside from a few males we've taken in over the years, we generally keep only females so there's no threat of any breeding activity.

And when we wound up with a male or two? The children were made to understand that any pregnancies would most likely result in losing one of their piggies. The hip bones of guinea pigs who are not bred at a fairly young age become set and will not allow for birthing of their babies. You wind up sacrificing the mother pig -- something my children would never do. So Snuffy, Midnight, and Old What's-His-Name were kept apart from the ladies during their time with us!

I know, from experience, it is much easier to take care of pets that are spayed & neutered. Too bad I learned the hard way!

Now if I could just get my hands on those feral cats running round and having babies across the street!

I have no issue with the statement but I have big issues with those that wish to impose that idea on others. At the end of the day a dog is the property of its owner and as such it is that persons prerogative.

Agreed!

I *personally* feel that spay/neuter is the responsible thing to do for pet owners, and people shouldn't randomly breed dogs without putting a lot of thought & effort into it (health testing, show/performance, home screening, etc.) There are too many already in shelters/rescue- and if you're unprepared to take ultimate responsibility for the pups you produce, you shouldn't breed.

But, personal responsibility is IMO something that should not be "legislated", at least not in this case. Some animal rights groups feel an "ideal world" is one in which pets are not "enslaved" by humans....and would gladly impose mandatory spay/neuter laws on ALL pets and legislate them right out of existence.

Plus, in practice, mandatory S/N laws do more harm than good....Rather than pay the heavy licensing fees or fines for keeping an intact, breeding animal- they just dump pregnant Momma dog at the shelter or on the streets. A couple counties in California tried it and shelter surrenders went UP exponentially.

Folks may disagree over what "responsible breeding ethics" means, but at the end of the day, I'd rather we all retain our personal liberty than be at the mercy of special-interest groups who'd like to shove their agenda down MY throat to further some higher purpose.

Every dog or cat I have ever owned has been spayed or neutered. It breaks my heart to think of how many animals are put to sleep on a daily basis.
