How did/do you name your pet?

Having several pets I am just curious how did you or how do you go about selecting the name you give to your new family member?

The kids usually name our guinea pigs. When left to me, I pick a name based on their personalities. We have/had two sisters -- Abyssinians -- who were fussy and prissy little things, so I named them Zsa-Zsa and Eva.

One was found in a neighboring township park by their maintenance crew and came to us in a recycle bin. I initially just dubbed her "Recycle". My daughter, though, thought she was worthy of a more ladylike name and renamed her Praline. We also call her "the sentinel" since she's always got her nose in what's going on in the room.

The others were all named by my kids... well, except for the many that came to us already named.

Well, when I decided on a Basenji, I decided I wanted an African name, because they are African dogs. A lot of Basenji owners pick a Swahili word with a significant meaning, for their dogs' name.

So after I picked out my puppy, but I still had to wait 4 weeks for him to be old enough to come home....I pored over Swahili-to-English dictionaries, online. Made a list of words that were easy to say and had masculine or noble meanings. Had words meaning "strength", "guardian", "handsome man" etc....when I came across the Swahili word for "Cheese". Jibini.

Now, Cheese has been my nickname since high school. And suddenly I was struck by the appropriateness of the name Jibini- Basenjis are a unique breed that don't make a lot of sense to most folks (don't bark, have primitive feral canine behavior patterns), so likewise, I thought he should have a name that is unique & weird

My 2nd Basenji was a rescue, from a puppymill. She came with her own name, Tonya Ann....which I thought was awful, for a DOG! Okay name for a person, I suppose....I would have changed it altogether, but she actually responded to her name. She was already skittish and overwhelmed after living in a cage her whole life, so I didn't want to add to her confusion with a name change.

Back to the Swahili/English dictionary, I looked for a word that sounded similar to "Tonya"....and found "Tanashati", which means Pretty. Shortened it to "Tana", saw that she still responded to it...and the rest is history. New name, new life, and a name that "reminds" her how loved & beautiful she really is

Four of my cats have color related names (Blackie, Charcoal, Mist, and Smoke). My 5th cat's name is the Cherokee word for Mother Earth - highly inappropriate since it is a male cat! My dog was already named when we got her.

This is Muffin, one of our Peke's:

Truckers

She also goes by the name "Cranky-pants"—so named because she only loves her mommy, and generally grumbles if anyone else picks her up.

And this is Lacey, AKA "Fat Kid", using her immense size to hold my son down on the couch against his will.

She got the name Fat Kid because when it comes time to play with the toys, she stands on the sidelines like the proverbial fat kid in gym class. She'd much rather be a spectator.

Truckers

Our pets always start off with their given name, then eventually end up with their nickname

I named one of my dogs after Angus Young of AC/DC. I named another Merlin because of the way he made food disappear.

My first pet ever was a beagle I got for my sixth birthday. I named him Charlie after my older sister's boyfriend whom I adored. My sister was furious her boyfriend loved it! LOL Over thirty years later, he came to my mom's funeral and at the dinner afterwards at the house he talked about the dog being named for him.
