I have a problem with people who think its appropriate to 'own' an animal that shares almost 99% of our DNA. I also question the ethics of people who think that tearing an infant away from its mother so they can have a pet is an okay thing.

There's no way to responsibly own an animal that has the strength of an adult man and can grow to be over 200 lbs in captivity. Sanctuaries are full of apes and monkeys that people thought they could keep responsibly. I know of several cases where chimps (one in particular was used in television commercials and was quite the roller skater), a spider monkey, a vervid were just locked away in a basement because they were too much to handle. They end up malnourished, cramped, demonstrating symptoms of mental illness, and living in their own feces.

Besides, have you ever seen a PMSing chimp? Its not pretty.

Don't be surprised. We've done it with closer matches than that. There's no accounting for intellect.

Heart Broken Family of Conn. chimp attack victim seeks $50M

Family of Conn. chimp attack victim seeks $50M
3/17/09
Quote:
STAMFORD, Conn. – The family of a Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee last month has filed a lawsuit seeking $50 million in damages against the primate's owner.
A relative of 55-year-old Charla Nash filed the lawsuit against Sandra Herold late Monday in Superior Court in Stamford.
The lawsuit accuses Herold of negligence and recklessness for owning "a wild animal with violent propensities, even though she lacked sufficient skill, strength and/or experience to subdue the chimpanzee."
Attorneys say Nash lost her hands, nose, lips and eyelids and may be blind and suffering brain damage after the attack on Feb. 16 in Stamford. She remains in critical condition at the Cleveland Clinic.
Neither Herold nor her attorney, Joseph Gerardi, has returned messages left by The Associated Press.

Sorry but she went to the house knowing there was a chimp and knowing it was acting out. That's like going into a hungry lion cage and then suing because it bit you.

Case should be treated like a workers' compensation claim

Quote:
An attorney representing the owner of a chimpanzee that mauled and blinded a woman is calling the attack a work-related incident and said her family's case should be treated like a workers' compensation claim.
The strategy, if successful, would severely limit potential damages in the case and insulate the chimp owner from personal liability.
The 200-pound chimpanzee named Travis went berserk in February when his owner, Sandra Herold, asked her friend and employee Charla Nash to help lure him back into her house in Stamford. The animal ripped off Nash's hands, nose, lips and eyelids, and she remains in stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic.
Nash's family filed a $50 million lawsuit against Herold, saying she was negligent and reckless for lacking the ability to control "a wild animal with violent propensities."
But Herold's attorney, Robert Golger, says in recent court papers that Nash was working as an employee of Herold's tow truck company, Desire Me Motors, at the time of the attack. He argues that Travis was an integral part of the business, saying his picture was on the wrecker, he appeared at the garage daily and he attended numerous promotional events
