i have a few black australorps, they are a very nice chicken. friendly, not wild, don't fly, and egg a day, winter thru summer.

i have a buff and a new hampshire red rooster. the buff is a little easier going than the red and a little calmer. both nice birds.

i have about a dozen hen, and 5 guinea and one goose egg in the incubator, lift off is in 2 weeks.

That's exactly what we do. The chickens don't need to be rounded up though since they roost on their own in the same place every night. Only have to round em up if you leave during the day. Finally fenced my orchard (around 25 trees, mostly apple) and plan on putting the new chickens in there to run around during the day which will keep them safer than loose on the property. Also hoping that they will help control plum curculio which is the only problem I haven't been able to solve organically on my apple trees.

like all critters, the more you handle them as babies, the easier they will be to handle as adults
I live too far north for a light breed like leghorn. Are they as uptight as I've heard? Why'd you quit breeding? Better than an egg a day has to be some kind of record.

Do you know how New Hamster Reds compare to RI Reds?

I'm not familiar with New Hamster Reds so I cannot make a comparison. Chickens are not only entertaining and great pets, they are PREMIER bug and small varmint control specialists. I have accomplished with several chickens what I couldn't with pest control and insectisides- and I live in the arrid west. Folks in the midwest and south who aren't chicken savvy wouldn't believe the benefits of keeping chickens, including guineas, not only for their wonderful eggs but the incredible elimination of bugs.
Love this thread.

I agree about the pest control. I also have cats...and haven't had any flea problems since getting chickens. This year I finally fenced my orchard (a couple dozen fruit trees) and I'm hoping that the chickens will help me control plum curculio (a beetle which destroys my apples).

I am really enjoying this thread. Despite growing up in farm country, evidently I know very little about chickens. The ones around me were simply white, laid eggs, and crapped all over the place.

And now I've just learned that Foghorn really WAS a Leghorn!

I'm getting edu-macated... and I'm luvin' it! LOL

I think Foghorn was his first name and Leghorn was his last. If you really want to be educated...try googling "Why did the chicken cross the road answers." Personally, I like the Dr Seuss version...
