In response to I could never be a breeder

So many people tell me they could never be a breeder because they would never beable to let a puppy go to its new home, and I SO understand that!

I think my interview of the potential buyer makes letting go a tad bit easier because I have told people they could NOT have one of my dogs on more than one occasion while they were standing in my home, money in hand. I DONT breed to make money...LOL, thats just not possible.

I started breeding when my dad was alive, we did this together for years. He would always tell me I want you to have something to do when I am gone. So everyday I work to carry on his dream. The "junk" that is being produced is very sad. To PROTECT, PROMOTE and IMPROVE the breed are my goals.

YES I miss everybaby that leaves here and I DO keep in touch with their new family, many for YEARS after the puppy goes home. There is a special feeling when a person comes to see puppies and they fall in love with one special pup. Sometimes there are tears and others just pure happiness.

I enjoy breeding and showing, but a new puppy in the arms of its new "parents" is a joy that cant be described. Us dog people are different to say the least...LOL. I wish everyone could know how amazing this breed is, their wonderful personalities and awesome love of people. So yes its hard to watch them leave BUT to know I have brought some happiness to another person is a good feeling to have at the end of the day.

I greatly admire you for your position. I know very little about dogs and it's ironic I'm reading your post at this time because I had been researching this subject and researching breeds so to select a doggy in the near future. I find "backyard" breeders an outrage and the horse world has their fair share as well. Breeding for color and profit, not for the embetterment of the breed- a REAL sore spot with me.
I was reading through a dog breeders website and the dog breeder laid all of her cards out on the table. A list of specifically what she expected from a potential owner in order to meet her criteria to own one of her dogs. She mentioned the very same thing you have here- She wasn't simply selling you a dog, she would remain in touch and advise as needed throughout the dog's life. She said she even preferred to care for "her" dogs when their owners were on vacation. That's incredible dedication and I applaud people for this. The dog "squared" (horse talk) up in the photo is sure beautiful. One of your show dogs? Insightful topic. SP

Honest question:

Is there any truth to the rumor that breeders, or rather pet stores will euthanize unsold puppies to keep their breed value up? (rather than giving them away free or cheap)

The dog in the picture is Gordy J, he is the number one show dog in the United States right now for the miniature schnauzer breed and will be in the Top Ten contest next week to see who is number one of ALL breeds, there are 1042 dogs entered in the contest....cant wait to see where we end up in the numbers game.

PharmPhail asked:Honest question:Is there any truth to the rumor that breeders, or rather pet stores will euthanize unsold puppies to keep their breed value up? (rather than giving them away free or cheap) Pet stores do all sorts of things so nothing would surprise me. As for breeders I have never heard of this but then again there are people out there that are just NOT quite right in the head so I am sure probably someone has done this. I myself dont see a need to keep a breeds "value" up. The price of a dog should NOT be based so much on its breed (it counts a bit) but more on the breeding that goes into the particular dog, the health testing and guarantee, the backline etc....and of course the price of a pet puppy is CHEAPER than a puppy purchased with open registration and NO spay/neuter contract because the purchaser is taking your hard work and efforts to potentially use in their breeding program.
