Trucking with my dog I have a german shepherd and he is almost 2 now but he is hyper and can be a handful! I refuse to give my dog up just so I can start trucking again! My question is that I want to take him with me but I have reservations of putting him in the truck and being able to care for him properly! I leave him home now for 12 -13 hours a day while I am at work! He is almost 90 pounds and I thought that owning my truck would be the best way to do it because! I would just remove the pass seat and have a buddy of mine make a barrier out of tubing to keep him out of my driving area of the truck! Does anyone have a larger dog with them on the road 24/7 I love my dummy and I just wont give up on him! Thanks to all pet lovers out there!!!

German Shepards are great dogs. I had one once along time ago...named Klink...I miss him alot. You don't have to worry about anyone messing with you or your truck with a german shepard.

I think he will find his spot on his own in the truck. The main thing will be the amount of time you are out of the truck where you still have to keep the temps in check. If you are going to take the pass. seat out you can always find one of those large pillows/mattresses for pets for $30-$60 to lay down in its place. My dog goes everywhere, she is 13 & don't think she could be convinced to stay home.

That dog needs exercise, nothing more. Walk him, run him, wear him out and youll be suprised what a good companion he turns into.

I realize he's big but you might want to leave that passenger seat in there I haven't met a dog (or cat) yet that doesn't love to sit in that seat while you are driving!!!

I work him when.... I can! We have a bone that he loves to fetch! Balls dont last long around here! I have a new promblem! Finding a good carrier that will let me bring him with me! I was going to buy my own truck but my expierence is not up to date! I have not been otr for a while and seems things may have to wait a bit! Like 6-12 months before me and Duke can go in our own truck! Roehl does not allow a pet in the truck with you! SNI doesnt! Who is a good carrier that would let my pal go with me? If I have to I can leave him with a vet and it will cost me 180$ every 2 weeks! It seems that this may be my only way to get things roliing! Whatever I do this is going to tough on me and him! But I will not give up on my pal! Let me know something drivers!

Having a GSD is a great! I've had GSDs all my life and would suggest to you that you need to exercise him a great deal. GSDs love to work and need constant mental stimulation and most of all training. If they don't have these, they become hyper (frustrated). They tend to have a Alpha mentality so you need to work on this. Get him lots of exercise and you should have no problem taking him with you. During your stops, use this time to train him. He'll love you for it! Good Luck.

| I had a Rottie/Shepherd mix with me full time. He was about 90lb also. I worked for US Xpress and they were great about it (you do have to put a deposit down, they'll take it from your check over so many weeks) There are somethings to be aware of though. Always have his shots up to date and carry the records with you. Some places, i.e. Cali and Canada, want to check them sometimes. Also tell your vet you will be travelling coast to coast. I'm an East Coast girl and I know there are things they require vaccinations for in Cali that they don't on the east (Corona is one, I think). Get them all because if the check point wants to be a pain they'll say you can't bring your dog into the state. Also keep in mind some shippers will not allow you to let the dog out on their property so let him go out before you get there in case you get stuck in the dock for endless hours. By the way, Werner also has a pet policy. There are carriers out there that allow them just keep looking.
