Saying Goodbye

It is tough knowing when to "say goodbye" to an old and trusted friend.
You ask yourself; "Did I make him suffer needlessly"? "Did I help him live a full life"? "Was his suffering more than he should have endured"?
I got "B-Toven" in 1992 when he was little more than a handful and carried him home in the inner pocket of my leather jacket.
B-Toven rode with me in a BIG-TRUCK for many years, keeping me safe from thieves, lot-lizards and over-curious D.O.T. Officers. He acted as "Big Brother" to countless rescue dogs I transported over the years.
When it became evident that he was getting too old to ride in the truck and we were afraid he would injure himself jumping out of the truck, he was retired to live at home full time.
He may have resented being left behind, but he was always glad to see me when I got home.

As he aged, he became noticeably frail and cataracts made him blind. A few months ago; he developed arthritis and neurological problems. He began losing his teeth as well.
A couple months ago, he began to rapidly deteriorate and I knew that "the day" was fast approaching.

The day before yesterday, I found him in his crate, where he slept, unable to stand on his own. He had defecated and urinated in his crate and he had slept in it. I took him out and gave him a bath. He had always hated baths before, and he hated this one as well, but he was too feeble to resist too much.

I let him sleep next to me until yesterday afternoon when I took him on his last ride.
He seemed to enjoy it and laid on the seat next to me; with his head in my lap he took a nap.

I held him and comforted him as the Doctor's "medicine" did it's work and wept as it ushered him across the Rainbow Bridge.

I am sure I will meet him there someday.
Goodbye buddy.

Bummer.

Life ain't the same without one's pooch.

Just know you did what was best for the dog, if not best for you.

I've done it five times, and it's never easy.

Oh, roadkill, I'm so sorry for your loss!
What a loving, and thoughtful way to let your bud go out. I'm sure it was well appreciated.

Oh RK I'm so sorry for this loss. I've been there when I had to take my beloved 14 year old doxie Butch for his last ride.

You did the right and loving thing.

We're going through this right now with our Lab...and our "adopted" alley cat......

It's amazing how our "pets" become as if they are our children....our best friends...

Our wonderful, grumpy, crazy cat died in February, aged about 15. She got frail, had a medical condition for a couple of years, but then began losing weight and getting really weak. Too old to risk surgery, we kept increasing medication but could not keep up.
Her last 3 days she wandered slowly back and forth from her bed to her food bowl, but would not eat. Not even fresh fish, bought specially.
She sat with my son watching the superbowl, and then both dozed off in front of the TV afterwards, her next to him, curled up and still.

My son woke up a couple of hours later and went to switch off the TV, realsing as he did that she did not stir when he jumped up. She had fallen into her final sleep, peacefully, at home.

RK, your making me cry here, just made that decision with one of my own last month. I understand your feelings completely. I'm sorry.
