NJ man says bear attacked him for his sandwich

Quote:
A New Jersey man is recovering from injuries he suffered when he was attacked by a black bear near his Sussex home.
51-year-old Henry Rouwendeal says he was outside packing his car for a trip when he was suddenly knocked down by the hunger animal.
The bear, which weighed between 300 and 400 pounds then took a sandwich that was in the trunk of the car.
Rouwendeal punched and kicked the bear which quickly fled, sandwich in hand.
Rouwendeal sustained a large cut on his left temple and several deep bruises on his body.
Officers found the sandwich wrapper and remains of the sandwich on the side of the home.
For now, the bear remains at large.

They should leave that bear alone...its not like he's a man eater. The bear was hungry and he stole a sandwich...big deal. (the guy should have known better)

New Jersey has the thickest population of black bears in the country...anybody with 1/2 a brain knows you don't wave food under a hungry bears nose. The people of New Jersey should learn how to live around bears or move to the cities...

People too easily forget...once you're off the "beaten path" and unarmed you are no longer at the top of the food chain.

EDIT: Another thing (damn media spin BS)...if a 400 lb. black bear attacks you, you'll have more than a black eye. That bear just bullied him (more or less said "thats my damn sandwich...I'm bigger and stronger and I can take it away from you"...survival of the fittest at its best.

Good advice...but don't run away. Just back away, sorta act like you're not afraid...just not in the mood to fight unless you have to. That has worked for me every time but once, and I shot that one with a 45 Colt when I seen there was no other way. (<<<young bear, only about 150 lbs, female...I surprised her, she didn't know I was there until I was within 100 feet, she had no choice but to charge because she had nowhere to run to...we were on a steep bluff and were both trying to use the same rock outcropping to get out of the storm)

I've been around a lot of black bears...been bluffed by them a few times but I have yet to see one interested in eating me.

They will attack people when cornered or protecting young ones or even food...but people are not naturally on the menu (unless they are starving.... and a 400 lb black bear ain't nowhere near starving)

There are a few rogues out there that get the taste for human flesh, but this happens with any carnivorous species that regularly encounters humans. IMHO opinion we are the problem in these cases as well as this poor man who was "attacked" by an evil black bear.

Who is it that continues to encroach upon territory? who is it that continues to abuse and destroy natural resources? who is it that wastes as much as they use? I promise it isn't the bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and other species. Humans continue to invade a territory that isn't ours and push out the natural inhabitants, then we wonder why they learn to not be afraid of us.

Out west here, if the Fish n game people feel that bears are developing a habit of going after people for food, or will not stay away from civlization,, they first try to trap and relocate to other wilderness areas. 50-75 miles away, or further
Bears are smarter than we think, they can be found in the same area, a couple of weeks later that they were removed from. because they know it's a easy source for food.

We had a bear in the Lake Tahoe area a few years ago, that kept getting relocated. Fish anf Game, took him 300 miles away, thinking was far enough. Nope. He was back in a month and and half. Yes they knew it was the same bear. Once a bear is trapped, it's tag.
Any in the end, they decided this was a problem bear and had to 'put it down.

In short what all the tree huggers want, is for people to stop going into the wilderness, undeveloped areas.

I'm not a tree hugger, but I also think it's about time that we stop expanding at the rate we are without caring about any of the future consequences. There is a difference between being a tree hugger and having a sense of practicality. At the rate that our civilization continues to grow we will run out of forests, and farm land to provide food for the people. Of all the species in the world man is the only 1 that in no way controls the rate of his expansion, all others will grow and shrink depending on multiple factors, man on the other hand just continues to breed away and grow without looking to the future.

One other living thing consumes resources in a way similar to humans, reproducing until they destroy their own source of life...viruses.

And I'm no tree hugger either.
