Red face Suddenly Aggressive Dog

Our 3 yr.old mixed breed has suddenly turned aggressive towards us.

We have only spanked her rump a hand full of times in 3 yrs.

Now, if asked to move, if told to "come back here!', when she slips her collar, if in any way we attempt to discipline her, she "snaps" at us.

My husband says, "aww, she's okay...just in a bad mood"..UNTIL she snaps at him. (She has bitten him)

What to do? She has actually bitten me, broken skin, when I simply disciplined by voice.
To me, it feels like a dominance problem...she thinks she rules US.

Any help?

Thanks!
Judi Kay

Hmmm
Normally dogs understand and respect their roll in the family as far as their roll in the pack
Is she spayed
Is she hurting and or sick and is using this as her way of communicating her discomfort

She hasn't been spayed. She is not hurting, nor sick. We take her regularly (every 6 months) to the vet. Her only "discomfort", (or so it seems), is me being on the truck.

That's why I feel it may be a "dominance" problem.
She trying to be the "alpha".
That explains her problem with me, but what about her problem with the "alpha male"? (My husband...only male around).

Thanks!

I once had a dog that bit me, she is buried in the back yard.

I had a male dog who stepped out of line every once in a while, it was a pissing match dominance thing, I held his 180lb ### down and bit his ear, a breeder told me this would establish my dominance over him. I had to do it every couple years....kinda ###### up and back woods but it worked.

If this dog is in the truck with you or your husband it is likely that she is becoming isolated and over protective.

i would suggest too establish the alpha role, and when feeding make sure it is the alpha who is suppling the food and do this routinely. as in set feeding time/s.

and regular excerise and some basic obiedience training during the walk.
i always used a piece/s of cheese.

I would recommend you checking out the TV show The Dog Whisperer with Caesar Millan. That guys is awesome with dogs, I envy his God given talent.

This is a dominance thing, and its way too involved to try to explain on here. Watch half a dozen episodes and maybe you have a little insight to the whats and whys.

Fight fire with fire...it does sound like a dominance problem (though its not common with females).

If you don't fix it...it will get worse.

I;m not saying "beat her to a pulp"...but when she snaps or bites, IMMEDIATELY retaliate with some aggression of your own. (love taps and "no sweetie, don't do that" wont work)

Does "I'm gonna kick you outta bed", in a REALLY MEAN voice count??

But seriously, what type of aggression therapy will work? (getting face-to-face with her already snapping fangs is NOT an option?)

I am always firm enough to make her "cower" temporarily, but she always does it again, and bites when I attempt to discipline. (and most f the time, my discipline is a water squirt gun...which she is afraid of, for some reason)

The bottom line is, we've tried nearly EVERYTHING, suggested by vets, friends, official animal people...
