A tax deduction -- for your pet

Quote:
Is this an idea whose time has come? A new bill in the U.S. House would allow pet owners to deduct up to $3,500 for "qualified pet-care expenses" for household pets, including vet bills.
Would the so-called HAPPY (Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years) Act give pet owners a break they deserve? Would it encourage more people to adopt abandoned or neglected pets? Would we finally be able to list some dependents on our income tax return? (Others have attempted -- unsuccessfully -- to use their pets as deductions.)

Well now! I have discussed this with both of my dogs. Goldie, the Golden Retriever thinks it is a fabulous idea. But then she will fall for ANYTHING, just like SOME people.

Sylver, the Siberian Husky quoted one line of the article that HE agrees with:

I sort of think I have to side with Sylver...

Yeah, my dogs are a huge part of our lives. My wife and I would be lost without one or two dogs running around. But it is just like any other non-essential item, INCLUDING CHILDREN! If you can't afford it, then don't have it!

Of course, this doesn't help much for the folks who have a good income, already have kids and animals, then suddenly find that income cut in half, or possibly stopped all together.

Damned if I know what the answer is. I just know that the government can't keep bailing everybody out of everything!

A tax break is not a 'bailout.' It's simply less money that the government steals from us, and I say that's a good thing.

You're right. Pets AND children are a choice. (Anyone who wants to whine about how 'children aren't a choice' can go stuff it--PM me and I'll explain in detail where babies come from since you obviously didn't get the memo.) And if my White trash neighbors can get a horrendously enormous refund for doing nothing but squirting out spawn, we ought to get a break for our furbabies. At least our critters aren't running wild in public places and being obnoxious, and none of them will grow up to be a thief, rapist, abuser, bully or other pox on society.

Give us the tax break and ban all welfare and tax deductions for reproducing, and let's see how quickly we see a drop in unwanted, unparented kids. Win-win.

You know how many people would try to abuse this if it were to happen, much less corporations trying to gain a tax break for throwing out a scrap to a stray and saying they maintained its welfare.

People have to take responsibility for their own actions. If they take in a pet, they are responsibile for living conditions, food & health. If anything it should be a wake up call to adopt from a shelter rather than pay a breeder who is only adding to the problem for profit.

I think its a good idea, and corps already get HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars in charitable tax breaks for donating foods they would not use or sell to animal rescue.

That is not a quote from a real Siberian Husky. They would be happy that anyone likes them and would go out and thank all those in support.

I know, mine climbs the fence. Now has an 8 foot leash with a block of wood.

Probably not a purebred. He was a rescue dog. Got him from the shelter on what was to be one of his last days...I'm neither rich enough, or care enough to pay for the DNA tests to check on his breeding.

I've had many dogs in my life. The last several have all been golden retrievers, and this is my first husky. Other than the "shedding factor," (I just thought I knew what shedding was before him,) he has been the greatest one yet!

He gladly jumps into the back of the truck, or onto the ATV, but (so far) has made no attempt to jump the fence. (knocking on wood!)

My husky is well known in town. He wears phone numbers and in case he loses the tag, the police also have the numbers as well.

In fact the county dog catcher refers to him as the escape artist.

He will be the last husky I ever own.
