Let pandas die out, says noted naturalist

Hmmm
Isn't this what obama has planned for our elderly

Money better spent protecting species with better chance, he argues

LONDON - Conservationists should "pull the plug" on giant pandas and let them die out, according to BBC presenter and naturalist Chris Packham.
"Here's a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac," Packham told Radio Times magazine.
Packham believes that money spent on conserving the panda would be better invested in other animals as the species is not strong enough to survive alone.

Ok, now I love animals. Pandas are cute. But lets look at 3 key facts:

1) The panda's primary diet is bamboo. This is a species whose link to the survival of one key plant. If the plant dies out, there will be a major issue with the species.

2) They have a 20% success rate at naturally breeding.

3) This is a species whom has lost almost total interest in natural reproduction. We are talking a birthrate of like 100 a year, with half not living in the wild. In captivity it is almost ALL artificial.

I do not believe we should be spending nearly as much as we do, I do not want them to diet out, and believe maintaining a good working breeding group is wonderful, but China maintains thousands of these and breeds them, but they do not release them. These are CAPTIVE bears. If they were raising them to release thats one thing, but they are not. The wild decline of panda's is not just caused by humans.

Cheetahs are a species whose entire decline is linked to humans, and little else. The breeding populace of cheetahs in the wild is declining at such a high rate that they are inbreeding too much and will die out if new blood lines are not introduce. Why not spend some of the billions that go into captive breeding captive pandas to strengthening the cheetah species through artificial insemination of wild cheetah with zoo bloodlines?

They are not as cute as Panda's but more vital to the eco system they exist in.

I can see where he is coming from, the amount spent on keeping the panda's breeding is huge. But they are only breeding them for captivity, they are not helping the wild ones breed. They are not strengthening the wild population of panda's just adding more bears to zoos.
