Violence erupts after dog run over

Quote:
After running over a dog on a rural road in McClellanville on Thursday morning, the driver of a pickup truck tried to "put the dog out of its misery" by whacking the animal with a machete and a hammer, authorities said.
The dog's owner heard the dog's plaintive yelping and ran out of his house, grabbed the machete and hammer and started waling away with the hammer, attacking the man who had been attacking his dog.
The driver was hospitalized with a skull fracture. The dog's owner is in jail, accused of trying to kill the driver. The dog, whose name is "Dingo," was hanging on for his life Thursday night.
"There are humane ways to euthanize an injured dog," said
Dr. Sarah Boyd, a veterinarian at Charleston Animal Society. Using a hammer and machete is not among them, she said.
According to a report from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the incident began about 9:30 a.m. on Tupelo Road, when a dog ran into the road and was hit by a pickup truck. The driver told deputies he got out and saw that the dog was dragging its hindquarters and he suspected his back was broken.
He told deputies he didn't feel it would be right to drive away and leave the dog in pain so he decided to kill the dog. He asked a passing motorist if he had a gun. The motorist didn't have one. He said he took a machete and hammer from his truck and struck the dog several times.

That is horrible. The poor dog crying for his life. How sad. The poor owner seeing something so violent being done to one of his family members.
Could the guy not just drive off instead of taking matters into his own hands??? wtf

That driver would no longer be with us if that were my pet.

back in early july, i ran over a family of beagles that were in the left lane on northbound i-5, just north of chehalis, washington. there were several vehicles on the shoulder. i moved over because it was also 0130, and didn't know what was going on. once my headlights hit the dogs, it was too late. there were about 2 adult dogs, and 4-6 puppies. i ran them all over. the people on the shoulder held their hands in the air as i hit their dogs. there was blood all over the passenger side of the truck, the drive tires, and so on.

did i feel bad about hitting and killing a family of dogs? no.

I can admit I would feel that it wasn't my fault I did the action you spoke of. But to say "I don't feel bad" is just inhumane.

I'm curious what suggestions the Doctor might've had for a humane way to put a dog down on the side of the road. Do you sit there with a hose and put it to sleep with carbon monoxide while the dog is in serious pain? Do you get on the radio and call the magical sky-crane to come out of thin air and drop some supplies down to you?

Do you bring the dog into the vet and have the vet put it down?....meanwhile the dog has been suffering for several minutes (or hours) and end up at the same finishing point that you would've been at had you ended it on the road....with the addition of one rediculously high vet bill.

As far as running over a family of dogs. I would feel bad for the dogs but not as much for the owners. Their stupid actions resulted in the loss. Unless their car was on fire there is no reason to have dogs out of the vehicle on the side of the interstate.

Could you please extrapolate on that statement.
Did you not feel bad because the incident was unpreventable?
Or do you have no compassion for life other than your own, or perhaps non human life?

I have put down a dog of my own. I used a .45
Hardest thing I ever did, but totally necessary.
I chose not to take her to the vet, not so much because of the bill, although I admit that was a factor, but because I felt it was a personal matter between me and an eleven year friend that I didn't wish to entrust to the hands of strangers.

That about sums it up here. My dogs are my children and I will defend and protect them as such.

As far as the driver the decimated that family of dogs..I'm not sure what to make of his comments. I ran over a good sized woodchuck once (no time to react - there he was) - but it freaked me out. I ran w/o the radio on and in total silence for a long time....

The driver may have not used common sense, but I still blame the dog's owner. And now he's facing a possible felony charge for how he reacted.
