Muskegon Co. man sentenced for shooting dog

Quote:
MUSKEGON, Mich. - A Fruitland Township man has been sentenced for shooting a dog that strayed onto his property.

Gregory Kruse, 49, will spend seven months in jail and serve five years probation after pleading guilty to one count of animal torture. He has also been ordered to pay $2982 in fines.

In February, Doug Twa brought his dog, Lena to work at a construction site in Fruitland Township. The dog got loose and ran into Kruse's yard. Kruse shot Lena in the leg, shattering several bones.

Twa later found out Kruse thought Lena belonged to a neighbor he had been feuding with.

There is a difference between a stray dog and a pet that gets loose.

My neighbor shot my dog today, is that legal?

Quote:
My neighbor shot my dog today, is that legal?

My dog goes swimming in our neighbors ponds (she's a full blood lab), and all of them have cows. She never bothers the cows, just goes swimming. Today my neighbor shot our dog through the neck and killed her. He lied and said that she was running his cows. Irregardless, isn't there some law that he should have to contact us 1st and give us the chance to go get her before he shoots her? I'm so angry and upset right now I can't see straight. We called the sheriff and he said they couldn't do anything because she was on his property. I can't believe thats true.
Quote:
Actually it is legal to shoot a dog on your property...Whether or not your dog was chasing the cattle is relevant would be your word against his & he was there so they'd have to take his word.
I live in the country & this possibility is why my dogs live behind fences when outside.
It is your responsibility to keep your dog confined.
I am sorry this happened.

Not really.

STRAY: (of an animal) having no home or having wandered away from home; "a stray calf"; "a stray dog"
By YOUR definition, a "stray" child has no home?

I guess, I should have worded it different for some to understand.

Maybe a stray does not wear a collar with tags. You think?

Sometimes STRAY dogs DO wear a "collar with tags".
All "stray" means (as I illustrated) is "wanders away from" (home or where-ever)

Whatever you say.

If you cannot tell the difference between a stray and a pet who has escaped, you have problems.
