Let's check the truck stop pocketbook. Hmm...Goshen Arco Travel Plaza, just a mile or so from the customer. Sweet.

I pull off at Betty Drive and turn across 99. There it is. Hmm...the guide says "Medium," but it looks more like "Small." Dang, make that "XXS Anorexia Special" since what I thought were parking spots are the diesel islands. Don't know if I want to park here for ten, but I can at least go in and hit the bathroom.

I parallel park with a few other rigs and head for the door. Lots of beat-up 4wheelers and a bunch of scroungy-looking folks in the way with big ol' attitudes. Nope, really not up for parking here. My bowels are getting a bit impatient, though. A quick trip to the can and I'll bail.

Stepping inside, I see that the outside is obviously the best part of the place. Half the lights are out, the place is haphazardly and randomly stocked, and yet more gutter trash...er, "financially disadvantaged" milling around. Some bored-looking chick who looks like she only got the job because she was too ugly to qualify as a lot lizard is at the deli counter, manipulating some stuff that might possibly be considered food...if you hadn't eaten in six weeks and were extremely stoned. I still wonder if the stuff was going into the garbage or coming out. The restroom is just around the corner.

--WARNING: This is about to get really gross.

I bump the door to the men's room open. Friends and neighbors, I've seen bathrooms in dive bars, backwoods gas stations and punk rock clubs across the nation. This one made them all look like a 'head so clean that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself would be proud to go in there and take a dump.'* What wasn't stained or graffiti-covered had obviously been destroyed by rampaging Methanites. The door to the stall hung from one hinge, revealing a sight that I couldn't forget if I stayed drunk for the rest of my life.

The bowl was up to its rim with swampwater and TP, and sitting in the middle, rising high and proud in the spirit of Mt. Kilimanjaro above the Serengeti, was the most enormous turd I'd ever laid eyes on outside the rhino cage at the zoo.

I was torn halfway between losing my lunch and wanting to go get my camera and capture this for posterity. I simply could not believe that anything that huge could possibly have come out of the sphincter of a human being. I swear, I'd rather give birth than pass something like that--even without being equipped with the required anatomy!! And, lying on the bowl--apparently just thrown there--was a piece of paper marked: OUT OF ORDER. Gee, ya think?

I don't know what hurt my brain more: the fact that someone got close enough to drop that paper on the bowl (I'd have demanded a HazMat suit) or that there are apparently people frequenting that place who actually need that warning!!

I didn't even park downwind of the place. I got the hell out, jumped back in my truck, practically bathed in hand sanitizer and Lysol, and hauled out of there before the bacteria ate my tires, rusted my chrome and faded my paint. Never again, folks...I swear I'd get some incurable pathogen just from using the scale at the place.

*C'mon...who hasn't seen Full Metal Jacket?

E. St Louis, IL

Drivers help me out here. I cant remember the name of the place it's off I 70 xt 4 I think it's called Gateway. I was layed over in that joint for Labor Day holiday ( Weekend one too ) And the owner of that joint closed down everything but the Fuel island, gas island and store. The restraunt, movie room, laundry and game room ALL CLOSED. Talk about some PISSED OFF drivers because the place was full of trucks and no one could move because all shippers/rec were closed till Monday. I asked the lady behind the fuel desk why the owner shut down the movie room, games all that stuff. shw said he did not care on what drivers wanted and if it did not have a cash box then he wanted it closed. I went east on 70 to another t/s and waited out the weekend that had their stuff open for the drivers.

I never stoped at that place for fuel or spent any money in that joint again. only to park for the nite.

I have to Agree the TA in Jessup is filthy, the parking lot is the biggest cluster %^&^% I have ever seen, 45 Min to get a scale ticket. No restrooms near the fuel Island and one nasty ### cop who spends his days looking to hand out parking citations

The 3T truckstop in Marshall,MO. Not there anymore, just a shop and dropyard. It was pretty darn gross when it was open as a T/S.

I'm not sure if it's still there. In the late 80's, Mike's truck stop in Wrentham,MA. That place was a real hole in the wall. I needed a shower so bad, all the showers drained into the middle one. I showered in the far right one. If anyone was peeing, it would drain away form me!

Just had to go to Truck Town Truck and Travel Center yesterday. In Fontana, CA, I-10,exit 61, on the NW corner of Cherry St. What a CRUD hole!!!! Wouldn't have been there, but needed reefer fuel, food, and a shower........only got reefer fuel! We were GOING to eat at the restaurant there, but after seeing how filthy the places that could be SEEN was, decided against breakfast. After walking inside to pay for reefer fuel, and seeing what just the STORE looked like, decided against that badly-needed shower, as well. Shoot, I could take smelling myself for a few more hours, versus contracting some weird kind of skin-cooties from the showers!!

Absolute worst truckstops I have seen so far, in order:

1. T/A in "Scary" Gary Indiana
2. Flying Dump in ColSCUMbia SC
3. Petro in North Little Crack Ark
4. T/A in Barstow Ca.
5. Any Pilot or Loves in any part of the Country...
6. T/A in "Throwup" (Gallup) NM
7. The "Oasis" in Essex Ca. ( I am questioning as to whether it is actually a front for an Al Queda Terrorist Cell)

Best ones, in order
1. T/A in Monroe Michigan
2. Flying Dump in Phoenix
3. Petro in Eloy Az.
4. Barneys in Yuma Az
5. Jubitz in Portland Ore. (It's a MFer to get into but it's worth it because of the shopping mall style building they have attached to it.)
6. Petro in Laramie Wy.
7. T/A in Baytown Tx.

These are just my personal opinions though and I rate them by my experience there only. I like the TA in Monroe because they are newly remodeled and the Waitresses there are halfway decent looking and I am a sucker for a girl with a Great Lakes accent! The Flying Dump in Phoenix actually has a few young, pretty ladies working there too and they are nice...food aint bad either

If I had to rate the chains, they would go like this...

1. Flying J (We can't fuel there because they don't accept ComData, but we go there to park, eat etc.)
2. T/A
3. Petro
4. Sapp Bros.
5. Pilot/Loves (absolutely the worst chain truckstops I have dealt with....I avoid them like the plague)

Flying J in Tacoma WA is an absolute PAIN to get into.

Any Pilot where you have to go THROUGH the fuel island just to get to the parking area.
