Texas Has the Nicest Rest Areas!

I've been meaning to post this for awhile now. Texas has a bunch of rest areas that they call 'Safety Rest Areas'. I'm most familiar with the one off I-40 between OK City and Amarillo, but we've stopped at many of the other ones throughout the state and they are nice. They typically have decent sized parking areas so the trucks aren't parked so crazy you can't drive through. They are well lit, there is always at least one attendant on duty. The rest rooms are always clean and stocked with toilet paper, soap and paper towels. They even have a 'display' area where they have interactive displays telling you about Texas -- great when you need to take a break from driving. For example, the ones near Amarillo have information about wind power and windmill farms (westbound) and a Route 66 theme (eastbound). Near San Antonio, they talk about the Alamo. Just a nice break from driving. Most states, I will bypass the rest areas at night -- been stuck in more than one where we had to get someone to move their truck in order to just drive through. But in Texas, I never hesitate to stop at one of their safety rest areas.

they are real nice up in new hamshire too. i walked in one time and they had a fire going on in the fireplace and a few seats beside it and new hampshire history tables and the best part was it was snowing outside at the time i was there. i stayed inside by the fire and just vegged out. it was nice. it was up off I-93.

The rest area/information center that Texas built in Anthony, TX a few years back is really nice.

I haven't been to TX in about almost two years, the welcome centers were nice but the others were nasty at that time. I like Iowa and Wisconsin up here, Iowa has free Wi-Fi, Illinois has also improved. West Virginia has nice rest areas.

Most states are improving their rest areas to make them more accessible to trucks, but improvements are slow, I-74 from Indy to Ohio had no rest area for the 15 months I drove it. They were building new ones, but it was slow going.

The hardest to access were the ones along I 70 in Colorado west of Denver, they had them pretty often, but they were small and tough to negotiate with a 53.

I like Iowa and Minnesota, there's a bunch of them and there usually pretty well kept.
