Good Food ---Bad Food

I would like to start a thread about the good and bad places to eat. We just experienced a bad one and I wanted to tell all the drivers pulling in not to bother. The RI Truckstop on I95 (exit 5B) in Rhode Island was definatley not worth the money. First off if you stay longer than 3 hours you have to pay to park. The food prices are high and you basically wait on your self and eat off of paper plates and plastic silverware. The food is just plain awful. My dog ate most of our dinners. Everything tasted like it was frozen (soggy and soupy) and warmed up. I guess when they have a sign posted at the cash register "All food sales final - no refunds" we should have known better

That sucks, I have only stopped there once, for a coffee break. Since I was only there for 10 mins or so, I guess I thought the signs that read 'the ONLY truckstop in RI' were kinda funny.

A good place to eat is the BBQ shack, in N Little Rock(that's not its official name, I don't think the place has one). They are on the service drive, past the Petro, in a big dirt lot (enuff room for 3-4 trucks, maybe more). The 'que has always been good, and it is a good value; For $5 (maybe 6, it's been a while) I got a pork sandwich, covered in sauce and slaw, and it was good!

I'm a BBQ guy at heart, so I like Soulman's just east of Rockwall, TX on I-30. Good parking for trucks, they have space for about 10, and they're right next to a small diesel station that has parking for about 15. Good BBQ and most every fixin' you'd want. I passed it by today because I was thinking I'd make my own when I got home, but found out we're having tacos tonight. D'oh!

I've been meaning to stop by Up In Smoke on the I-35E south of Dallas, exit 364, Hillsboro. They have these funny billboards of a cartoon steer looking to the side with a worried look on its face. Funny stuff! Anyway, I've heard some good reviews about it, but living so close to it, it's usually right when I like to get deep into the saddle for the drive to Laredo.

I've stopped there. Excellent BBQ. I was all kinds of disappointed when I found out about 100 miles down the road that I had left the jar of BBQ sauce they sell on the counter.

One of my favorite places to stop is the little diner next to the Loves on US 69 in Atoka, OK. There's also a western store next door. Good food and great value. Waitresses are pretty friendly too. Gotta love those mom and pop greasy spoons.

My faves

I don't have a whole lot of favorite truckstop restaurants, I like the one at Dallas Pike, WV, across the highway and down the hill from the TA. I also really like that one at (1-10 ex 159?) Plateau, TX. Damn good restaurant. Decent chrome shop too!
I'm biased, though. My FAVORITE truckstop restaurant will always be Johnson's Corner in Loveland, CO. I grew up eating there, lol. I live five miles down the road.

Most of the TA truckstops that used to be Rip Griffin's tend to have good food, too. Tonopah, AZ has great beef stew. They still use the old Rip's recipe.

Yucky food

The Citgo on Rt. 31 in Peru, IN. I had just sat down, and I overheard a customer in the booth next to me tell the waitress, "I'm sorry Miss, but this sandwich doesn't taste very good at all. And these fries aren't good either". So I'm thinking, "Oh great, I wonder what I'm in for?"

My french dip came and I somehow choked it down. About 1/4 of the sandwich was edible. The rest was all grissley and full of fat. My Pepsi tasted like it was mixed with really bad well water. The cushion of the booth seat I was sitting in was so wore down that it was just like I was sitting in a hammock. My last time there.

The other bad food was at the Petro on I-69 at the Jamestown/Fremont exit in Indiana. Most Petro's have the "Iron Skillet" restaraunt, but not here. I tried the fried cod dinner - old microwaved frozen cod strips which had a breading on them which had the consistancy of beach sand, and tasted like it too. Coleslaw which tasted just like the inside of an old refrigerator, and old tartar sauce which was yellow on the top, but when you dip into it it's white.

That's my story.
