An age old scam is back

Three times this month in different states I have seen the old "three card monty" game up and running. Sadly, people are still falling for it. As times get tougher for everyone, this and similar scams are sure to crop up more and more. Everything from the shell game to real gold guaranteed not to turn your neck green for at least a week are coming to a truck stop near you and in numbers larger than we have seen in years.

Economics turning south tends to have scam artists and "woe is me" prophets flocking to truck stops and street corners all over. Sorry folks, you're good people and that makes you a potential sucker in the eyes of the less than ethical. The old lessons still apply. Don't trust strangers. If it looks too good to be true. etc, etc, etc ...

Let me share how I became a disbeliever. Barstow, CA truck stop. Early 90's. Very nice guy with very sad story. Need money for bus ticket. Here hold onto my drivers license as good faith. Sorry, no money to give. Enter truck stop, shower, shave off 3 months growth of beard and return to find the same guy, the same story, Different Drivers License! Not recognizing me beardless he rattles of the sad tale more exactly than any actor could have memorized lines. These guys and gals are good at it and quite successful. Be careful.

a good indicator or how bad the economy is doing is the increase of pan handlers at the truck stops and other places. I got the knock the other day sitting at a delivery at 5 in the morning and just last night at a piolt in knoxville at 2 in the morning

If anyone ever comes up asking for money at a truck stop, I simply point at the cost of fuel and ask HIM for money!

My husband ran into 2 of them in the short period of time he was out there, so he just told them, sorry buddy but im in training, I dont have any money. But the sad truth of the matter, is that most likely it will get worse, as things in this country get do, twice in the last month, I have seen two people on bicycles, digging through the garbage for food, one in my county and one in the next, I could not help but to feel bad, regardless of there situation
