Truck stop quandary: Four-hour parking limit in Virginia county

OOIDA member Dennis Sullivan was minutes away from being out of hours on Monday, June 30, when he pulled in to get his scale ticket at the Pilot Travel Center in New Kent, VA.
His plan was to stop and take his 10-hour break at the truck stop before heading back home to Marquand, MO, for the July Fourth holiday weekend. However, he said a sign he saw posted at the truck stop stopped him in his tracks.

It's been illegal to sleep in the truck in Sturbridge, Mass for at least 20 years. Slept real good there a time or two worrying about it! LOL
Back in the day, always tried to get out on NY17to a rest area after reloading somewhere NE. Got woke more than once after a short nap by DOT.

"get outta here driver, we need some room to set up. "

Never had to be asked twice! LOL. Sure did appreciate to wake up, too.

Your right, I ran out of hours and stopped at a pilot in NY. They had signs posted 4 hour parking. I was like, Who is the moron that came up with this rule? I still stayed there. Just because I was out of hours.
The city or county commissioners that come up with these rules, need to get on a truck for a couple of weeks. They also have no general knowledge of Federal Regulations.

You must be talking about the Pilot in Newburgh. The signs say 5 minute idle, 4 hour parking. I asked at the fuel desk... the nice lady there said the county makes them post the ordinance, but leaves it up to the Pilot to enforce it, so they just don't.

They will pay in the long run for only 4 hour parking..... That means 6 swifties could be backing into that hole in 24 hours....

Doesn't the federal gov't overrule the county gov't?

No. The state of Virginia has that rule on all of its rest areas and does indeed enforce it.
