New proposal for truck stop

New proposal for truck stop
8/31/08
The Star-Ledger - NJ.com, NJ
Quote:
UNION TWP.:Pilot Travel Centers will be back before the land use board Tuesday seeking permission to renovate the existing 13,542-square-foot Johnny's Truck Stop.
Earlier this year Pilot sued the township, the board and the municipal zoning officer after it was denied permission to demolish the existing building on the 11.75-acre property and construct a 8,040-square-foot travel center at exit 12 on Route 78. According to a public notice, the board has agreed to consider the new application while the litigation is pending.

From the days I lived in NJ, Truckstops are bad...they don't want them there.the planning boards and zoning commisions could care less about the tax income generated by a truckstop. The general public has a view thattrucks can come and go thru thier state with little to no need to stop. On a whole thaey ail to see the need for paring spaces, after all there are plenty on the NJTPK,why do we need more? Just plain short sighted, Kinda like thoose folks out in CA back in the mid seventies that voted to stop all building of power plants. Be happy today 'cuz tomorrow we will cry. I say the heck with them, hope they dry up and blow away. Maybe they should build a yard in PA so trucks don't have to come in the state and they could drive over to PA and get what they need in thier four wheelers. Hummmm What a great idea...enuff of my rants
Good luck and Good truckin

Nearly three years into a battle to upgrade an old truck stop in Hunterdon County, NJ, the Pilot Travel Center chain received some good news from the Union Township Planning Board on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Only 54 truck parking spaces. That's alot for a Pilot to begin with isn't it? I usually stay away from the truck stops on 78 in NJ to begin with. The TA in Bloomsbury charges to park if you don't get 50 gallons and the other Pilot over that way is a pain to get in and out of.

Like I said before, NJ is not looking to get any more truck stops and most folks there don't want them around just look at the hurdels put in thier way to just raze the site and put up a newer building. As much as I dislike Pilot TC at least they are trying to improve a destitute truck stop. Yes, only 54 parking spots are not enuff, it is better than what was there before. As we all know NJ needs more truck parking, and any improvement will be welcome.

It's typical NJ/NYC mentality.....to them it takes 10 minutes to get anywhere. I was down off of the first exit on the NJTPK and I asked a cop where I can park for the night.....(I had no idea at the time there was a Flying J right there) and he said, you can just "Run up to Bordentown, its 10 minutes up the road....."

My son in law was OTR for his dad's company for years and he refused to go back to New York and that area. Now I see why. Since his dad has died he's now O/O and staying as local as he can.

I swing into Perryville every few days since I pull out of breinigsville. They had someone snapping pictures a few days back so I got to asking when they were knocking the place down. I got the impression that the town would only allow a renovation of the existing building. I'd love to see what they can do with that crummy building because as she sits it's a mess. Hopefully they get the right to tear it down as it should be.
