They definetly need some sort of improvement when it comes to their "food".

A new idea for better food at Flying J buffet and off the menu?

Would it be better to have each Flying J buy a portion of their raw foodstuffs from local suppliers and farmers directly?

Would that help the quality of the food?

Can someone pass that idea along to the wait staff at the next Flying J they go to?

Thanks.

Last company I worked for I had to fuel at J's. My Dad worked for the same company (still does) so of course we each had a frequent fueler cards (like all of you I'm sure).

Well, we were both dedicated so we were home quite often and we decided to put our J points to good use. We took my wife and son and mom and brother and sisters to the nearest J (Effingham, IL) to eat the buffet one Friday night. Thought it would be a nice treat. We all just piled into mini vans and headed up.

Now, the waitress was really, really nice and did an excellent job for all of us. She was friendly and made sure we had plenty to drink. She was good and got a good tip for it.

The food on the other hand was wretched. I LOVE fried chicken, but I couldn't even touch this stuff. They had a lot of fish and stuff (seafood night I guess). I don't eat fish, but my wife said it was pretty bad, too. My mom ate some shrimp and didn't feel good shortly thereafter.

As far as the people and the cleanliness, it was great. The food was the problem. Now I ate at one on I65 north of Indy that was good, but I didn't have the buffet. Just breakfast. I try to not get the buffet when I can help it.

Best truck stop buffet in my book is at the Petro in Rochelle, IL. I love stopping there. Always make it a point to, even if I don't buy anything.

If the food is bad, don't keep it just here ...

Go to the article in the Long Haul magazine of Flying J (it can be read on line) about the New Sheriff in Town at food services for Flying J and let her know about the bad food experience you had at that Flying J.

If I was in a similar situation, I would have contacted the New Sheriff and told her about the bad food.

As of this date, the only bad food I have encountered at a Flying J has been the "Goodyear" fried chicken.

Best fried chicken I have encountered has been at the Apollo Restuarant in Rockville, Maryland. I use that as a benchmark for all other fried chicken in my travels.

I've always thought of the buffet as a health hazard anyway so I won't miss them. You either get sick from food left out to long or from touching the tongs that all the sickies and people who don't wash their hands after using the restroom have spread their cooties all over. So , I say good riddance to the buffets.

I noticed that at several other J's. It seems that they are beginning to think all truckers run on their schedule.

Yeah , I pulled in there at 7 p.m. last night with 10 1/2 driving hours logged . I had a 7 hour drive home this morning then the weekend off . I wasn't extending my break to eat there . I grabbed a sandwich down the road when I stopped to fuel .

That's a real bummer. I spent a lot of time down in Walton KY (just south of Cincinnatti) and always ate at the Flying J. The buffet wasn't great, but it was always edible, and there was always lots of something that I liked.

Another great place was the Husky House Restaurant on Hwy 17 E just on the limits of Sault Ste Marie Ont. Lived up there for 17 years, and lost count of the truckers breakfasts (and calories) that I put away over the years.

Oh well....the times they are a'changing.
