On the topic of APUs, I remember reading that the only '09 certified apu is the Cummins one, because it runs its exhaust through the DPF-or whatever they use for particulate control on the Cummins motors. Sportster, I know you will correct me if I'm wrong!
Thanks Brother... Thats what I thought but I did hear some crap on them trying to get the older diesels to go that way. Now for CA...well we all know how they are....You can sell drugs, murder, marry your boyfriend/girlfriend, run a 4-wheeler 8- mph down I-5 But dont idle your diesel..They are the root of all evil in that state.

On many of the new cars they are making the system so that it will need to be filled at oil change time. No need for the owner to ever mess with it. That is how it is on Mercedes models in Germany now.

Sorry guys...

What is this stuff suppose to do, reduce emissions? Will it cost you guys a lot more money or just more hassle?

The Urea Injection is designed to reduce Particulate emissions (help me out Sportster, am I right?), in conjunction with the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). Is it brand new tech, so it is expensive, still buggy, and so far seems to be reducing fuel mileage even more.

Hopefully the Green Nuts start picking on the railroads soon; being their punching bag is getting old.

Your close wallbanger.

The way I am seeing it is that it reduces the amount of NOX that is being put out the exhaust pipe. This is going to be used in conjuction with the filtration assembly on 07 and up trucks. If you think about it the engine can now run dirtier than 07 emissions because tha major issue was NOX reduction. So now the engines can (if they wanted to) produce more power than current engines.

Urea is a synthetic hog urine. Although it is not exactly hog urine. It comes in a mixture that is designed to work the best with the system. It has a very harsh smell to it that will stay with you for a while. I spilled some on some paint on the truck, and my pants, and my boots. If you clean it with water right away it does not affect anything. If you let it sit for a while then you will have issues. The stuff is slightly acidic. The thing is you can not put hog urine in the tanks to fill them up. As much as it would help you can not take a leak into it either, it won't work.

The urea solution has been researched since the 70's. It just has not made sense because of the price of oil, tighter emissions, and the cost of the system until now.

Nice BD, but what would you tell the mechanic when then truck has to come in on a hook?!

Thanks for the explanation Sportster. These new diesels may still be tricky in trucks, but the new cars/light truck diesels are looking really interesting.

I thought so. I am sure a driver will come up with a way to "FOOL" the system.
