Pilot to support 2010 SCR trucks with 'at-the-pump' diesel exhaust fluid
Quote:
Pilot Travel Centers, with more than 325 owned or licensed retail travel center locations in 40 states, announced plans to carry diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) “at the pump.” The company’s initial rollout plans call for the fluid to be economically available in bulk at more than 100 Pilot Travel Center locations nationwide beginning in mid-to-late 2009.

I hope stations with private vehicles do the same thing . Pickups and cars with diesels in 2010 will require this fluid also . They say cars use 1 gallon every 2,000 miles .

Some will require it, some will not. The 6.7 liter Cummins in Dodge trucks will not require it. All other Cummins engines (except the v will require it. Been using it for the past eight months. It is not all that bad, just don't catch wind of it because it does smell bad. Just one more thing to add to the truck to make it more complex and cost more. Trucks will use more than that. By the time you empty 200 gallons of diesel fuel out of your tanks you should have to refill the urea AKA Diesel Exhaus Fluid. So it should equal everytime you have to fill up with fuel you should have to fill up with DEF. 1 urea tank =6 gallons

The California Air Resources Board has attributed 2,400 premature deaths to diesel emissions and estimates health costs of diesel emissions from 2005 through 2020 are $200 billion.

Like those results probably aren't just a wee bit skewed. I don't think I'd trust anything form any board out of California regarding that. BTW - just heard that California is quietly throwing fits about the APU's because they have emissions too.

"In Europe, where heavy trucks have used SCR engines for years, the same mixture of 32.5% urea and purified water that will be used in North American engines is marketed as AdBlue. Industry names such as AdBlue and Diesel Exhaust Fluid stem from a desire to distinguish urea-based fluids used in transportation equipment from similar compounds that have been used in marine and stationary engines for years. Marine and stationary engines use a blend of 50% urea and 50% purified water that, if injected into a truck would just completely ruin your engine."

It sounds like the Hippies are taking a page from Anti-smokers and Meathead. Has anyone ever met one of these "premature" deaths? Has anyone ever met someone who died of second hand smoke? Must be the same people. Sorry, I don't buy into the whole Global Warming bull####. The only country getting attacked is the US, (if anyone watched the Olympics this year) China is a 100 times worse than we are, where's Al Gore screaming about that? He's too busy shining his Nobel Peace prize and thinking of more ways to scare the average Joe into sending him more money. Give me a break.

I think there are other things in the air that the goverment needs to deal with. Leave diesel engines alone. As far as ALL diesel engines requireing that fluid... Only the new ones. I dont see how they will make it work for engines made before 2007. I have a 06 Dodge 2500 diesel and I wont put that crap in my truck.

NorthStar, you have nothing to worry about, the Urea mix is for the '09 compliant diesels, and I doubt that any sort of legislation can be concocted to make owners of older diesels retrofit the DPF systems to older engines (at least not yet).Cali is a whole different ball of wax- they want to phase out ALL older (read non-compliant) truck diesels, so that their air is cleaner (ha!).

On the topic of APUs, I remember reading that the only '09 certified apu is the Cummins one, because it runs its exhaust through the DPF-or whatever they use for particulate control on the Cummins motors. Sportster, I know you will correct me if I'm wrong!
