i would love to see wal mart open a few truck stops. I eat in my truck as much as possible since i have my wife with me. Making something in here is a whole lot cheaper and Taste better. Anything that saves us some money is fine in my book. it would even be nice if they offered a shuttle service.

Holy moly....you make an EXTREMELY valid point!! Yeccchhh!!

Even the BRAND NEW Walmart I went to in Gibsonton, FL....hadn't been open a MONTH, had a filthy, disgusting bathroom that reeked of urine.

And it was the WOMEN'S room....Judging from what my husband tells me about some men's rooms, I hate to think what the typical Walmart men's room looks like.

While I can't stand paying a 150% markup in truckstops for cold medicines, shampoo, laundry detergent & feminine products....gah, you just sold me on the best reason WalMart should NOT get into the truckstop business. I'll stick to the handful of 'em on I-80 that welcome trucks for my personal needs.

wal-mart?

Don't think Wal-Mart will get into the truck stop business at all. It just isn't profitable enough.

I did books for a small chain of truck stops(or rather, worked on finding mistakes managers made in the books) and I was shocked to find out how little diesel fuel made as profit... At the time, it was about a $0.015-0.02 profit per gallon sold for diesel fuel.

I remember one month(winter) where there was only 180,000 gallons sold at $0.015 per gallon bringing a diesel gross profit of $2,700 for the month. I also seen the electricity/heat bill for that month and it was closer to $9,000.

I later asked the district manager about this and he said yup, selling fuel isn't profitable, they make their coin on selling food, drinks, coffee, gifts, medicine and the other over priced stuff that you find at truck stops.

I bet Wal-Mart could do a little better on fuel profits... but likely not enough to make the endeavor worth while to them...

Re:

Walmart already has rest areas for trucks to park. I will shoot a photo tomorrow of mine. I think it would be a great idea for them to have a discount store where people can take showers, get cheap food etc. They shouldn't enter the gas station thing.

It would probably never happen, but I would not even go to a wal-mart truck stop even if it did exist. I don't like Walmart, I don't support walmart, I don't like how they destroy small communities.

There are no wal-marts up here where I live, thank god, even if there was I wouldn't go. I would rather support a smaller store in town than support a wal-mart.
