Re: Giving Truckers a Bad name...

I think that there are many more people than you realize that have a good opinion of truckers. But, like you say, it's the bad ones who seem to get the attention.

I have written a book that should show truckers in a good light. I am doing more research right now, hoping to either rewrite this book or writing a follow-up book. But, it really depends a lot on my research.

I am trying to locate older truckers who drove between Nova Scotia, Canada and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, back in the seventies and early to late eighties.

There was a woman who used to travel through this area, who travelled mostly with truckers. In the Maritimes area, she was known as "Suitcase Annie," and between Montreal Quebec and Toronto, Ontario she was known as " 401 Annie." ( 401 is a major highway. )

The woman was good looking, ( in her younger and middle aged days ) well built, beautiful singing voice, and she was also schizophrenic. But, a lot of truckers knew her or about her. I am trying to make contact with some of these truckers to get as much information as possible about her, who she really was, any relatives and what happened to her.

She may have passed on or she may be in a nursing home. I would really like to tell her life story. I picked her up on September 24th, 1984 in Truro, Nova Scotia and drover her to Halifax. I spent the whole day with her listening to her incredible stories and having her sing about a half a dozen wonderful songs to me. It would blow your minds if you knew who she claimed to really be. That's why I am doing so much research. I am trying to verify her story. I know that I can't put the URL link to my book on here, but I think it might be O.K. to tell you the name of my book. It's called, " My Day With Marilyn," by John Alexander Baker.... I guess you could google my name?

So, I need all of the help I can get. That's why I am on this trucking forum and another one too. If I can get the information I need, and verify her story, this will be the biggest story , world-wide, in history. It could solve one of the biggest mysteries of the twentieth century. " That's Big."

I have NEVER left urine bottles, or any other 'body waste' laying around in truck stops. Even though my truck is not "spotless" I do keep a trash can lined with plastic bags in the truck for trash. I always pick up trash that falls out on the ground, and I don't throw lit cigaretts out my window (one of my REAL pet-peeves).

However, one of the problems I see, is that most truck stops DONT place adequate trash receptables in their lots, and some have NONE at all. I visited a TA truckstop on I-90 near Ashtabula OH one day, and ALL of the trash cans thru-out the lot, especially near the fuel pumps were full to the point of overflowing. I complained to the manager, who told me that the "regular" employee who is responsible to empty them had not shown up for several days, and there was no one to do it. <WTF???>
I told the manager that HIS job was to make sure that ALL jobs were completed, and if no-one else could do them, it was HIS responsibility to do them himself. Needless to say; he didn't like what I told him.

Three days later, I stopped at the same truckstop, and the trash cans were STILL full, with even MORE trash spilling onto the ground.

Did I throw my trash onto the ground as well?
NOPE, when I left after fueling, I drove to the next truck stop and dumped it there.

SOmetimes it helps to contact the Corporate Offices, they seem to be able to convince the General Managers to "clean up" their acts, especially if you email them photographs.

One of the cleanest truck stops I had been to in a long time, the new TA on I-20 in Dallas has plenty of trash cans thru out the lot and was clean. But I DID see the driver of a truck PUSH a trash can across the lot with his front bumper, until it tipped and he run it over (instead of MOVING it by hand, possibly when he did his PRE-TRIP).
The "driver"???
An INSTRUCTOR for a local "Truck Driving" school.
He also neglected to pre-trip his truck, or have any of his six "students" do it. Just jumped in and drove off, with coffee and donughts in hand

Such is the "NEW BREED" of Billy Big-Riggers; wanna Run with the BIG-DOGs truck drivers we have today. We have all met them.

then there are the morons who have so many accidents/tickets, that when they crash, it is so spectacular a news event the public again reafirms their thoughts about us.

the only "good" image that i saw recently was in the Disney move "CARS", in which Mack, the truck was tired and needed his rest, telling the little race car the DOT regulations mind you. i thought that was cool.............but, he continued to drive on, because the little race car "pushed him".............that wasn't cool............

we can talk all we want here on these boards about the industry and what we can do, wnat we should do, but in all reality, it can't be done, and the Government will get into us more and more.

keeping ourselves clean, and shaved, well dressed (at least clean clothing), keeping our rigs clean, obeying the road laws, being courteous, and such works fine for us few that subscribe to this, but there are so many others out there that don't give a flip, and we all suffer due to that, and it will never get any better.

we can change trucking "one driver at a time", but my gosh, there's a few million of us now, and so many leaving and coming into the industry that changing "one driver at a time" will become a futile attempt at best.
I believe that a man with a beard can be just as "clean" as one that shaves. It is all a matter of keeping the beard trimmed nicely, whether the beard is long or short. Myself; I have always found the skin on my face too sensitive for regular shaving, going back over 30 years. I have been "bearded" for over 20 years now. In the summer, I keep it short and trimmed, long and trimmed during the colder months.

Drivers have to clean up their act first, be respectful, look professional and act professional first, we can't wait on Hollwood.

Very true,if it's to be done to our liking or done at all,we got to do it ourselves. I really like the idea of taking that pic and email it to executive branches, seeing is believing,i'm just tired of seeing it,!

Re: Giving Truckers a Bad name...

Yes, I was at a TA Truck stop one day filling up my tanks. I started to noticed a guy behind filling up his tanks and while he was waiting for them to filled up. He went on his catwalk behind his truck and starting to take a leak between the fifth wheel and I was like WHAT THE ****? I just turned around and finish filling my tanks and got out of there. I think this was in IL if I not mistaken. I guess some people are just even lazy to use the public bathroom as well.

Why care what others think?

Anyway, my point is this...There are more good and decent truckers out there than bad but it seems to me the bad ones have stuck out like a sore thumb and have given them all a bad name. I find it totally unfair. Just my two cents and I hope that one day the public will see that we have so many hard working, moral and ethical drivers out there that need to be appreciated and set apart from the bad ones.
Why even giv others who look down on u the satisfaction of letting them think you're worried about their comments/views? If u know that the stereotypes r mostly just that, then that's all that matters. thx, peace!!

First Step to improving industry Image.......... A SHOWER!!!!
And you guys know what I am talking about, most drivers yo smell before you see, and then when you see 'em, you see their version of proper attire is a pair sweat pants, grease, and god only what else stained T-Shirt, and flip flops.
No ones gonna respect somone who doesnt respect theirself.
