This is what I have tried in the past and it seems to work for the most part. When ever I see a semi in my bunk, the first thing I do is not get emotional about it. I generally will give the jerk behind me an excuse as to why he feels it’s an absolute must to have his nose up my ###. Generally it may be that he is climbing a hill and doesn’t want to lose his momentum and is waiting for the first chance to get over into the passing lane, something he should have been planning for way before he got that close to me in the first place. Or, perhaps he is going to get off the next exit in which case he should have been slowing down so he doesn’t flip over trying to execute a turn (something I see quite often out here). If this so called professional driver persists in rubbing bumpers with me, the first thing I do is hit the jakes which slows me done slightly while at the same time I turn on my flashers. Nine times out of ten, that gets the seeing impaired off my rear end. I generally do not get on the CB because I simply do not wish to engage a conversation with anyone who is brainless enough to think that tailgating for any reason has it’s reasons. It’s kinda like arguing with a druggie or drunk which wouldn’t surprise me that many of these drivers are.

The other thought is that many of us hope that some of these unsafe drivers out on the roads will read some of our concerns posted on this forum, but it is my opinion that most, if not all the drivers out there who are creating mayhem on our highways are not that sophisticated to operate a computer or even know how to use the Internet. Now keep in mind that these are only my opinions so, if any driver out there is offended by anything that I have stated here than all I have to say is that if the shoe fits…

Australia

This would have had happened about 1986. Traveling from Sydney down to Adaminiby in the Snowy Mountains near the Victoria/New South Wales border {Australia} a truck pulled up behind me - I was traveling the speed limit, started blowing his air horn and flashing his lights. My passenger - older brother - said to just stay at the speed I was doing and eventually the truck passed and cut in tight forcing me to brake hard and I was towing a Horse Float - empty - this really annoyed my brother so he said to overtake the truck, which I did - pulled up beside the truck, down came the passenger window and you could hear the cursing from the driver and he cut back over close to my vehicle forcing me across the centre line of the road - In the meantime, a long range UHF radio had been used - a badge was held out the window and the driver signaled to stop - the look on his face was priceless - in a few minutes three police cars were on the scene - that driver got a rude awakening to tailgating. From what I heard back, he was overweight, over length, out of hours and expired license.
My brother was a Crown Sergeant in the NSW Police.

It's one thing I never do - it's so easy to pick the wrong vehicle and end up face to face with one very p***** off Police Officer.

I have called 911 before on a truck who was driving recklessly. Gave them a description of the truck and within minutes the State Police had him pulled over. Yeah, I’ll call the authorities on what some may call my fellow trucker but, if these guys want to act like criminals out here endangering our lives than there’s nothing “fellow” about anyone. I would rather not be associated with idiots like these. I love my job but these criminals our going to try to ruin it for everyone unless some of us more responsible “Professional” drivers out here start calling on these drivers.

I'm getting a little bit sick of it, bcuz we all know that driving is one of the most stressful things, and if I had to slow down for any reason, the truck would definitely hit me, so I hav to worry about my life every time a truck gets right on my bumper. R u all really so sadistic that u hav to inflict fear into a person's mind. I mean really, that serves u a purpose, obviously, so I guess the next time it happens to me, I'll just tell myself. Well, my pain and fear will help this driver deliver his load that much better. Here's my service to u America!
I am sorry to hear that it seems to happen to you so much. My suggestion to you is IF you can safely get Trucking Co. name and Tractor or Trlr number calls the Co and Yell. Jot down the approx time also. That will help you prove that it was that particular truck. Most trucks have on-board computers and the Co. can pull the records and be able to tell that the truck was in that area. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR TAILGATING.

AMEN: There are people out there fighting to get us the respect and pay of professionals. One bad accident were the Truck Driver was being a south bound side of a north bound donkey. Gives us all a bad name and makes all that work for nothing.

The Old MN CDL Book cover once read: Only the best will drive!
A firefighter once told me, "it's not how fast you get to the fire, it's if you make it there in one piece"
We truckers are held to a higher standard then others. Why, cause we're driving 100 tons of metal down the highway. It takes alot of nerve, concentration, and energy to drive those rigs. In perfect conditions and more so in not so perfect conditions.
Tailgating is'nt safe no matter what. I like to be home just as much as the next guy, but if I get into an accident, well it's warm beer and cold pizza for supper when I get back.
If you can't handle your rig in a profesional manner then get off the highway!!! It takes one to make us drivers look bad. And another 100 to make us look good once again.

Not a trucker (yet), but my 2 cents anyway

I think tailgating is a universal problem, you just tend to notice it more when you have a truck riding your bumper instead of a little iddy biddy car.

Me, I like to keep at a safe distance from the vehicles in front of me. That way, instead of having to slam on the brakes if something happens, I simply take the foot off the gas when I see traffic slowing down. But that's me in my VW. Not sure how things would be if I were driving a big one.

I have a great cure for those drivers who feel they need to tailgate......its called a camera!!! I'll take a picture and then email it to the company with a description of events. It's not a "he said, she said" event when I have a picture of the truck riding the bumper of another vehicle.

Then I'll use the photo in my safety meetings!
