Have y'all ever heard a train's horn, on a train, not on a Big truck? There's a different pattern of long and short blasts for different situations. It's a set pattern, and it's the same at R/R Crossings, but the engineer can interject a personality in that signal, and often does.
I think it's interesting to listen for that.

YOUR personality comin' through that Big truck's lighting system.
Like a handshake.
Some are firm, and some aren't and some don't shake at all.

Best Blink, Blink personality I EVER saw was an O/O --- who always pulled the same refer --- had "THANK YOU" flame cut out of a piece of diamond plate, polished aluminum.
That was backlit with interrupt lighting that made no mistake when THAT Big truck driver was sayin'

Believe it or not,.................................

When strollin' 'cross oh, say,........... New Mexico, because I LIKE that State, and I'm passing another Big truck, I try to glance at that Big truck's driver, and give a little wave. It's cool when it's a newbie company driver 'cause their eyes light up when I wave. I think the ones who do that will be the better drivers. I remember when,..................................

Anyway,......................
Once I see the headlights flash, I immediately hit the interrupt switch which blinks my inside two red Big trailer lights as well as the marker lamps, front -- rear & side.

I hold 'em off for a second or two, followed by three short blinks. And continue to put distance betwixt our Big trucks.
Then I hit my turn signals, and ease 'er back over. Once I've completed my lane change, I give three more short blinks.
And move on to the next governed Big truck.
Y'all see, my Big truck had looonnnggg legs.
Ran outta speedo Waayyy before she ran outta tach.
Christeen,.................. was her name.
Triple-Digit,.............. she was.
But we made it a habit to keep the (speedo) needle betwixt the lines.
SAFETY is NO Accident.

Always like the idea of a lighted sign on the back, but never pulled my own trailer. However, the interupptor switch is a great tool and it blinds no one. I used it often when driving big rigs. Never used my horns unless I had to, but I always like the idea. Sometimes they scare others and that might not be a good idea. Trains, yes! Trucks, maybe, on some occassions.

Not So! Many drivers appreciate those in a car who have a good feel for the unwritten rules of the road.

Flashing Brights in an emergency is a great idea; or in the presents of a speed trap. However, flashing brights to let someone know they are clear to move over is down right unprofessional as it blinds most drivers who just happen to look in the rear view mirror at the time the brights hit them between the eyes.

I just say, be yourself when in a car or a truck. You know what people appreciate and you will always recognize those who don't.

Oh, I never do that!! They're right in front of you!! Never flash brights at someone that close!!

My late father was an driver from the "old days". When I used to ride along with him he would ALWAYS let the passing driver know he was clear by telling him on the CB, I still hear his voice even today....."Come on in Mr. (insert carrier name here), your clear". Hell, he even did that after he stopped driving while traveling in the RV. One last note... Back then, if someone was flashing their headlights at you, it meant that there was a highway patrol or equivelent up the road from you.

You just don't see the courtesy out there these days and that is sad. Life on the highway could be so much better and tolerable if drivers would just help each other out like they used to.

I'm not a driver but learned when I was a teenager learning to drive to do the flashy thing the right way so I get what your saying and do practice that on the road.

As for stopping to help either a stranded trucker or 4-wheeler. I still do and am pretty comfortable with it. Obviously my doors are always locked and windown NOT rolled down but I try if the situation permits to get close enough, usually the opposite side of the street and honk to get the drivers attention then flash 'em my cell phone to see if they need me to make a call. Usually I get a phone wavin back at me and I just go about my business.

Now if I get no phone wave back and the door starts to open I have the CHP on speed dial.

The one thing I'd like to know if guys can shed some light on are mile markers. I'm still a little fuzzy on how to read them. I know most give the county that they're in which is the easy part. I assume that the big number in the center the number of miles travel into that particular highway or interstate but what's the rest mean?

Yes, I remember those days but as time changed, those Mr. (company name) all of a sudden were not Mr. (Company name) as the reply was definitely "Feminine").

Yep, and people still let you know when there is a speed trap, although many don't pay attention and walk right into it anyway. Change in mentality today.

Back in my UPS days the supervisors "discouraged" us from signaling other drivers to cut back in. The explanation I was given was that if I cleared someone back to the right I had just accepted responsibility if he hit me. With that said, I still did it if I wasn't being given a quarterly ride.

Still just common courtesy as far as I am concerned. All I can say is don't get to quick on the draw; especially if being passed by doubles or triples.

Guess that is called, "attention to detail!" Right?

the only i time i give that i dont need your help kinda attitude with somebody is when some ####### thinks they need to blind me with there high beams at night!!! what really gets me goin si when they flash the high beams off and on a bunch of times!!! now i know alot of newer trucks have DRLs and they cant be shut off. in that case i would rather somone do nothing then blind me with there damned high beams!!! ive been out here long enough to know when its clear enough for me to come over if your gonna blind me with your high beams
