Truckers' Trucking Forum/Message Board - The Premiere Truck Driver Forum

The Truckers' Image Under The Driver's Hat. Discuss ways for truckers to improve their image. Urine bottles, trashy truck stops and no truck parking signs abound. How do we change our image and earn respect back?

All this fuss about losing a bit of sleep because of a reefer unit parked next to your truck.

In the Army, one of my postings was with an Artillery unit for 4 years. Used to go out into the field for months at a time with those guys, park my truck behind the line of M109 Howitzers and wait for a service call. I had no problems sleeping, even when all 6 guns went off at once, when I was tired. Earplugs helped a lot.

So once I get my licence and get on the road, all you reefers are welcome to park next to my rig. I'm not going to shut yours off.

Beef and pork is chicken-feed compared to what I haul. Try MILLIONS worth of Pharma......
(Turn MY reefer off and have the DHS, the DEA, FBI, SBI and any number of Alphabet-Soup law enforcement agencies crawling up your backside)

Roadkill...I don' know if you haul insulin from Eli Lilly, but thank you if you do. I used to use a different brand when I first started on insulin and all was well for a few weeks till I got some that was bad due to being exposed to heat. Anyone cuts your refig unit off, will place a lot of folks like me in danger. It was a few days of torment till I figured out what was wrong. I check the bottle everytime since then. The label is different on the Eli Lilly and you can see through it. The other brand had a white opaque label and you could not see except at the bottom of the bottle. At any point thanks for your care you give meds. Millions of us thank you.

Reffer driver pulls in a parking spot. The spots next to him may have other rigs in them. Now sleeping beside a reffer can suck.
So they pull in beside somebody knowing that the guy next to them will be disturbed by the thing running all night. But now here his the part that just blows my frikin mind!! They unhook from the rig from the trailer and go park somewhere eles!!!
Besides the fact they just made someone elese night misserable, now they are takeing up 2 parking spots..
Okay I agree that they should not be unhooking from the trailer and park somewhere else, but as far as pulling in a spot knowing the guy will be disturbed by it running? It's a reefer. It has to run... otherwise a load of meat, vegetables, ice cream, etc will be ruined. Trust me probably 99.9 percent of reefer drivers do not cruise around thinking "Hey who can I wake up?" Besides the reefer units are so advanced now that you can barely hear them.

What annoys me more is when it's a damn near perfect night for sleeping... like in the mid 50's. And some driver will pull in next to you and insist on running that truck up to high idle(with the engine fan coming off and on blasting away) and let it run all night like that. With the way fuel prices are right now, drivers shouldn't be doing this. And before anyone says "Hey it ain't my fuel so I don't care?" Yes it is actually... when your company announces at the end of year we have to cut pay because of all the money we spent on fuel? Congratulations, you just contributed to that decision.

I pull a reefer, and will do like a lot others. I try to be respectful where I park in a truck stop, if I have that option. But like stated before, most of the units I've been around are no louder than an APU. And as for the smell or fumes, some people must have a keen sense of smell. I bet you really hate the guys with APU's and ones with grass burner exhaust!

Beware of a tree hugger's keen sense of smell. I can smell their bull from thousands of miles away....

Very true. These new style units are quiet compared to old stuff we had.
