Of course! I shower, feed the horses, then go lol! Seriously if I can't be comfortable due to feeling out of sorts in certain apparel, even if it was a job, I'd look elsewhere. I have some beautiful dresses. They're for weddings, funerals and the very seldom times of anything else that may come up lol!

I dunno 'bout the rest of you but I look & feel good in a suit & that's what I wore.
'Course the jacket & (sometimes) tie came off in the truck as well as the nice shoes.
My casual is tweed or heringbone sport jackets, jeans with a non-white button down shirt.
Once in awhile a polo shirt.

I've gone into restaraunts & been invited into the kitchen because they thought I was from the health dept.

At a customer or two, I've been handed clipboards to sign because I looked like I supervised there.

At one place I took a shot at playing exec & asked a unloader to "take care of that truck first."
It worked & I just didn't have the heart to tell the guy he was "punked".

I don't know how it works in your neck of the woods but in mine, the clothes make the man.
I'm sure I've endured less hassles because of the way I look.

I want to go to the U.K.! But I can't afford to right now..

S1ckening.Vendetta- have you got a few companies you'd like to get on with? How do their drivers dress? Are they required to wear uniforms or cover their tattoos, etc? Wear their hair in a ponytail or braid if it's long? I agree with those that have said clothing/grooming is as the company dictates, because you are representing that said company and as some have noted, clean shaven requirements may have to do with being able to use safety equipment. Now...If the company doesn't mind long hair, beards, etc. then just stay neat and clean. A hairy driver that's a competent driver is much more of an asset to a company than a clean cut driver who doesn't know his ... from a hole in the ground.

Keep us posted as to what trucking is like in Europe. I keep reading how much more difficult it is with the old cities and narrow streets. Post photos!

Most of all, congrats and good luck on your first job!

I don't fashion myself with facial hair, but don't see anything wrong with those who choose to. However, a privately-owned company has the right to set any standards that it wishes to. If a company wants to require a driver to wear a top hat and tuxedo, a lawsuit is unlikely to fall in the favor of the plaintiff claiming discrimination. If you are unwilling or unable to adhere to the standards of a privately-owned company, don't go to work for them.

I wear colored t-shirts, slacks or khaki, and house shoes most times.

You can wear whatever you want most times. Just don't expect to be treated the same, as the guy who showed up dressed sharply, with a neat trim.

THAT is the right of other people. While you may be happy with your appearance. Other people are not required to have the same opinion.

This is the price you and I both pay, for our choices.

Very true! "Comfort at the price of a negative perception" is a prickly pear. However, I don't think that most people expect truckers to look like they are going to an opera opening. If more drivers would simply shower regularly, brush their teeth, and throw on a fresh pair of jeans and a new tee shirt on a regular basis, while avoiding walking into a shipper with a Camel dangling from their lips, this would go a long way toward a more positive image.

The general public understands that trucking isn't a glamorous job. I believe that we can dress comfortably and still project a positive image. 'Course, the driver who is hitting on the Pilot cashier with grease under his fingernails, tobacco stains on his teeth, and emanating body odor while still thinking he is God's gift to women sets the image of all of us back to the Stone Age.
