Actually my folks told me to "use" (not go to) the bathroom before we left and if enroute "just hold it till we get to (a place). They supervised fluid intake pretty close too.
When we traveled with our 2 daughters, we had (still have in storage) a portable potty. It was a device similar to TV tray except the top was roundish and had a snap on plastic insert. You placed a plastic bag (similar to our kitchen garbage bags now-shorter) in the seat, snapped in the insert and ready. Finished, remove the bag, tie the top, fold up the device and onward. Dispose of the bags at the next available trash/garbage receptable. Cheap, sanitary and clean to handle.
Back then I weighed only 185 and it would hold me. It was not a junky
little thing. Last used camping with kids 8 and 10 who are now 40 and 42.
May not be available. Try a camping store Gander/Cabellas, etc.

When i was a kid all bottles were glass.. no paper cups, so if you did throw something out the window then it would shatter then causing a flat tire for someone due to not having steel belted tires back then. so no we did not pee in cups or bottles or jars on a trip. we stopped at rest areas and gas stations.

never said I did it just was told that as a kid. I also grew up in the country so there were plenty of trees in the woods that needed watering .
Back then we did not have to worry about the cops saying anything. Shoot now I sound old
Back then we could also shoot off guns and not have 2-10 cops showing up ordering us to drop our wepons then writing us tickets for unlawfull discharge of a firearm.

Urine Bottles on Highway May Be Due to Drivers Too Concerned With Gas Prices to Pull Off

8/10/08
Quote:
ONTARIO, Ore. — Police say there's been an alarming rise in urine-filled plastic containers found along a three-mile stretch of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon.
A litter crew for the Oregon Department of Transportation picked up an estimated 200-300 urine filled plastic bottles, along the highway, about half of which were found in a short stretch dubbed "Three Mile Hill."
Police say that drivers — particularly commercial trucks — are typically driving very slowly through the area.
Police think the price of fuel may be causing drivers to travel slower than normal to save fuel while at the same time passing rest areas or truck stops.
Under Oregon law, improperly disposing of human waste is a misdemeanor which can carry a fine of up to $250.

Hey they are starting to hear us about fuel prices
Too bad it has to be in this context
I hope this isn't going to be the basis for a multi million dollar study!!!!!

I'm a chick, so I can't use bottles! Just can't aim that well! In all honesty though, I understand using them, but please do the proper thing. It's not that hard. Not that the ones that are tossing them alongside the road are likely to be on this forum anyway.

OK, I just have to ask. What kind of bottles? I'm thinking that my coke bottle has too small of a hole, or perhaps I'm just not acurate enough. Or does someone sell "pee bottles"? I guess that would be how the folks know what they are when the see them. Perhaps if folks really need to throw them out, they could leave the top open so they would drain.
