Lonewolf, I have been very fortunate, I am what I would consider openly gay, because I don't lie about it, and I don't feel oppressed. I am just who I am, and in the day to day of it all, it is all the same, gay or straight. Work, pay bills, clean the house, feed the kids, feed the dog, make dinner, do the dishes, and all the mundane stuff of life.
I struggle with being open minded an tolerance myself. The other day I sat down with a hot cup of coffee and start flipping throug the channels to find something to watch. I stumble on some show talking about gay marriage, they inteview two lesbians, and they were large women, and one was wearing a tux, and I am not talking about the Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey in a suit look. I am talking a woman dressing, looking and acting like a man. That just annoys me., so I have to try and be open minded and think, okay thats how she wants to dress and look. To me I don't get it, I am a lesbian, which means I am attracted to women, that seems simple, what confuses me, is being a lesbian and being attracted to women who look and act like men. Then I tihink, gosh, I am a lesbian, shouldn't I be more open minded and tolerant. Then fortunately it is time to do laundry, take the dog for a walk,an get the kids to bed, so I spared from my close minded inner turmoil.

I understand, no matter how understanding we try to be, it seem we all have our own walls that we put up for expectations.

I see everybody is all caught up in the haircut business, and no one has responded to this question. So let me give it a shot.

There is no automatic "right" answer to this question. You know your dad, and you know yourself.

If your dad is a good worker, and well thought of by the boss, and if you are going to be a good worker, and become well thought of by the boss, then you certainly should apply for the job.

OTOH, if your dad is not one of their best employees, then perhaps you would just be spinning your wheels. Also, if you are not 100% certain that you will make him proud of you, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Most companies are not going to have a "nepotism" policy, with the possible exception of you working directly for him. Most companies figure if dad is a good worker, son will likely be as well.

I feel for you. Started losing mine at 19. Just remember, women often think bald men are sexy!

Yeah, but an awful lot of those folks did not look like homeless bums when they first hired on. Of course some companies don't care what you look like, but you will stand a better chance if you look "normal" (whateverthehellthatis)

When I was thinking about becoming a truck driver it was suggested that go to a truck stop and talk to truck drvers, ask about their company and so and so. So went to a truck to talk to drivers. Well, I didn't want to go knock on doors and be taken for a lot lizard, I decded to go in a get some coffee and when I saw a trucker that didn't scare me I would offer to buy them coffee or a meal if they would talk to me about trucking.
I was sitting in a good spot, but all that seemed to be oming into the resturant was travelers and I wanted to talk to truckers. Well, this couple who appeared to be traveling sat down by me, and I was hoping to keep thatspace open fr truckers. Well, aasthey were talking I realized they were truckers. and so were some of the others that I thought looked more like travelers than truckers. That couple was no where near what I thought a husband and wife trucking team would look like, they looked like the husbands and wife at my church, or in my neighborhood. Most of the other truckrs too looked like the average hardworking family guy. Sure there are those that look rough, but I was surprized by how average looking most were.
I know don't look like a "Truck Driver". That was my family and friends biggest concern about me becoming truck driver. I am 5'3 and 110 -115lbs. I had t go to the kids department to buy my coveralls because I couldn't find a size 4 in the adults.

alot of truckers are saying just go conservative so it isn't an issue. So the only thing you need to decide is what do you want to be more, a truck driver or a guy with a mohawk.

The part that gets to me is that most senior management types are from the boomer generation like me.
The same ones that said they would never be like the generation in charge have become the same way.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I have discovered it only takes spending few minutes with an individual to see what they are about, to see beyond appearance, but apparently that is a few minutes too long for some people.

I quit trying to fight the system long ago. If that makes me a sellout, so be it.
I like my job and the great benefits I have, so I conform to their system.
I miss my jeans and my beard, but can't have it both ways.

My nephew who is 25, drives a Budweiser truck...10 wheeler...and has a mohawk. He's been driving for them for three years now, and he's had the mohawk for about 2 years. They don't have a problem with it, and the women in the office and the bars he delivers to love it. He used to be a wild kid, but has really settled down since getting his cdl and this job. He's a hard working kid and real pleasant to be around. He stops and helps people that are broke down all the time. Like you said mustang, it only takes spending a few minutes with an individual to see what they are about. It's about what's on the inside, not the outside.

Unfortunately, upper management does not always have such enlightenment.

Speaking as one of those annoying large lesbian women who are almost always wearing mens' clothes ie: work boots, jeans and a t-shirt... and who have a man's buzz-cut haircut... and who get called Sir on a regular basis... and who are also just being who they are... and who in eight years of spotless driving -- no tickets, no accidents, no late deliveries -- out here helped pave the way for you to hang up your heels and climb on up in the big truck....

Speaking as all that, I'd like to say thanks for the tolerance... big of you.
