The Truckers' Image Under The Driver's Hat. Discuss ways for truckers to improve their image. Urine bottles, trashy truck stops and no truck parking signs abound. How do we change our image and earn respect back?

Haircut question

Howdy guys Im still kinda new only 3 years straight truckin this year. I finally turn 21 in January soo Ive started to grab up some OTR applications to fill out and have applied through hammerlanejobs or .net I cant remember but anyway to my question about larger companies and personal hygene... Now this is a strange question but at a larger company are they real particular or not?

I have no tatoos clean shaven and for the most part a pretty normal guy except I have a Mohawk and I really dont want to cut it as I do prefer to have my hair cut this way its pretty short though about an inch high when I spike it. I have met several truckers with long hair and outlandish beards and I realize that ata smaller company it would hurt my chances and I could shave it off but I dont want to if I dont have to. I know it drives my current boss nuts

Also I have another question would it be a good idea to apply at the company where my dad works? its a smaller company bout 10-13 trucks all pull flatbed and idk if most places dont like hiring family or not. I ahve worked for one of there drivers and I know I could get a good refrence and I just have one ticket to list which is a speeding ticket.

You only have to get past one person to get hired, the interviewer. If he is 50 yo and conservative type of old fashioned guy, what are your chances? A suggestion, tone the hairdo down to get hired, then bring it back after your probationary period. And don't show up at the interview with below the arse baggy pants. You're almost 21, not 14 anymore.

I dont mind giving a kid respect. But for the life of me, I cant give respect to a kid because his pants down, or hairdos, or getting all tattooed up and trying to look like a UFC fighter, or a kid with those gigantic blocks of wood in his ears.

But if he can TRUCK...
I have to give credit where credit is due.

Of course you have to think about what you're gonna do too. Hazmat has it's own rules on hair and facial #### due to safety equipment. So do chem plants and other customers. Face jewellery can have nasty reactions to chemicals.

Main thing with the "do" and such is that it's time to grow up now. It's not up to the trucking co to adapt to your wants, you're representing them.

Lol now let me clarify I dress appropriately and unless I take my hat off I dont hardly even get really noticed. I can drive pretty good for my experience level with no accidents and I had the unique experience to work with the guy that was an instructor at the cdl school I went to so its basically been like a 2 year training session from this guy. I do act respectful and the main reason why I like my haircut is it hides my hairline.... there I said it at 20 my hair is starting to creep back quicker than my old mans (total bs by the way) and Im not quite ready to deal with going bald just yet. I also have no problem takin #### for my haircut bc I know it isnt normal but It doesnt get very long and I wouldnt spike it and expect to get a job lol. I know I have alot to learn yet but Ive always wanted to go OTR and the quicker I can get on the road the quicker some guy that wants a local job can have mine.

Trucking is no place for the new generation of "expressive" people
and their public image preference(s)

Want the big bucks? keep a low profile with a generic tone.
Cry "DISCRIMINATION" all you want and then learn to be content driving for Swift and Werner or any other low buck truck that "excepts you"

The simple fact that you posted the original question would lead one to believe that you are somewhat aware that your choice of hairstyle might upset someone...

Consider the worst possibilities and prepare for them. People are going to pre-judge you based on your dress/looks/mannerisms/demeanor and form an opinion within their mind before you speak one word to each other...

Why not use this fact of psychology to your benefit and impress someone first, before any verbal communication?

J.
