Went for my DOT physical today, blood sugar fine, BP fine - Eye Test - oops. Had Lasik about 10 yrs ago. Had my left eye set for distance and right eye for close - reading. All has been fine til now. Dr says I need a waiver to drive CDL. He said this is no problem. I don't like any bumps in the road - no pun intended.

    Will start classes 8/11

What is your visual acuity. If it's at the minimum of 20/40 in each eye without corrective lenses , you're OK...you may need glasses if you can't meet those minimum requirements. Never heard of a vision waiver.

Going over some FMCSA info I noticed mention of a vision waiver, but did not come up with what I encountered right away, however, I did come by this actual waiver application - a 15 page PDF; http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmcsa.dot.gov/files/docs/Vision_Exemption_Package_0706.pdf

    Dear Sir/Madam:
This responds to your inquiry about exemptions from the vision standard in Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. To obtain this exemption, you must be qualified under all of the other physical standards in 49 CFR 391.41 without any other waivers or exemptions.
An exemption will only be issued if granting it is likely to achieve a level of highway safety equivalent to, or greater than, the level if none were granted. The information you must submit, which is listed below, will enable us to evaluate the safety impact of any exemption. This is explained in the enclosed interim rule adopted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on December 8, 1998. Following the instructions in this letter will help you meet your requirements under the interim rule. You should consult the rule to understand the process which must be followed before an exemption can be granted.
Here is the specific information about your driving experience, driving record, and vision condition which you must submit to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Any misinformation or required information not submitted may result in the denial of your exemption request.

    hal380 Thanks this.

    Hi Crusty;

Not sure what my acuity is - when I had the Lasik I purposely had the left eye set for distance and the right eye corrected for close work - IE reading and computer. I see fine now for distance and close work. The brain sorts out which eye to use for which use - distance or close. But when I had to cover my left eye and read the chart with my "Close Eye" I couldn't do it. I explained about the Lasik correction and the Dr. said, "Ok, we'll get a waiver. Have the eye Dr. sign that you are ok to drive a commercial vehicle". Even if I have to get "Driving Glasses" that's fine by me.

    Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this.

Thanks Alaska for the research - based upon what you have found, I think I will just get a prescription of glasses which will correct my right eye, ( the close one), and not need a waiver. Just simply a driver who wears glasses. A waiver just calls attention to myself.

    Regards

    Hal

Saga continues - Went to Costco for eye exam and expected to get prescription for glasses. Turns out that my right eye - the one for close could only be corrected to 20/60 and that would have been a coke bottle lens. Doc said the glasses would be lop sided because the right lens would be so thick and heavy it would pull the glasses to the side. In reality - she said that I have an advanced cataract and it would be simple to remove it and implant a new lens and then I would be 20/20 both eyes.

GUESS WHAT I'M GONNA DO??? will have the procedure and then finish my DOT physical.

Hi HAL380, I hear you on the far/near sight thing. I first had my eyes done that way but when the brain, what little I have, was made to do that I could not see and had to go back and have both eyes set to see far and use reading glasses.

I just started driving school last week and I had 1 little set back as I failed my sight test too. I am being treated for Macular edema in 1 eye, had 1 of 3 needles in the eye and it is a lot better than before the shot. I was 20/200 before and now at 20/50 and need 20/40 to pass.
The school also said I can get a waiver so I can still get my card. When I see my Dr. for the 2nd shot I will ask him to fill out a form for the waiver just in case but I hope the 2nd & 3rd shot will fix my issue.
Oh because I failed sight test we did not do the rest but I am sure that will be fine for me.

    Good luck
    Dave ----
