My name is Jess. Retired from the US Navy just over two years ago and relocated to North Idaho.
Have been struggling to find a full time career and the job market here isn't the greatest. Considering getting a CDL to open up some doors. Not sure what route I want to go, who I want to train with, drive with, or if I even want an OTR career vice just earning the CDL for a local job.
Seems the best bet would be to get some OTR experience and then explore my options from there.
Would appreciate any advice, guidance, or even if there is a great thread regarding these topics already just point me in the right direction.
Thank You.

I got out of the navy back in july and got hired on a local company hauling tanks making about 1k week after taxes. All i did was call and filled out an application said i was navy and was hired on the spot. Alot of companies will/might hire just for the fact you served and that the fact you would be well disciplined so they don't have to worry about you add much. So in my experience every where i went i got offered a job. Just give it a shot like you routing a consumable list to the chop. All he can do is say no or cut it back.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Recommend a private or community college CDL school. Several good companies will hire you right out of school. For those local jobs, knock on some doors with that new CDL and CDL school certificate and have all the endorsements.
One good school is DTS (Driver Training & Solutions) :

I'm an old Navy vet also; that's one reason I spend lots of time in the Orient; good memories.
There's some good OTR companies that hire new CDL grads from your area:
trans-system.com
Central Oregon Truck Company
Watkins-Shepard
Jim Palmer Trucking
