I am new to this forum and just wanted to introduce myself:
My name is Delio Vidal. I am new to the Truck Driver's business. I have just concluded my CDL A School in Miami, Florida and current reside in Hinesville/Ludowici, GA, about 35 miles from Savannah.
I am retiring from the Military next month from a career of 27 years as a Sergeant major in the Army. The reason I decided to pursue a career as a Truck Drivers is just simple because I like to drive, I like the outdoors, and also because I want to be away from too many people.
Like in any other job I realize that we have to start from the beginning, getting experience and proving ourselves, so here is my plan:
I want to start driving tanker. I know that few tanker companies will accept drivers straight out from the school. I believe Schnider is one of those companies and I have placed an application with them. I have my temporary CDL from GA and the permanent should be arriving in the mail within the next 2 weeks, until them I am not able to apply for my Hazmat background check and TWIC cards, since they required me to have the permanent license. Eventually, after I have some experience and decided if I really like the profession I want to buy my own truck. In any way I appreciate any advise you all can give me.
Hi everyone

Knock around as a company driver for a couple years. You will pick up a ton of free info over time from other drivers and O/O's to help with your choice of things.. You will need this time to filter through all the BS.
27 years service, and Sergeant Major, ........ tells me that you will be a quick read. You don't get to be a SM by being naive.
You will know.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Shaggy, what you mean to 2-7 to trucking. The reason I ask that is that my last unit is 2-7 IN from 3ID. Don't know if that is what you mean.

RetiredUSN, thanks for the remark. It has been a rewarding career and because I've always liked the military it was easy to pick up on things. I have many skills to include a degree on IT, but my real passion is driving. I hope to continue to enjoy what I do, more than just for the money. Although we can live without it.

Dang, Sergeant Major, and I thought I did good as a hashmark E-3 in the Navy!
Schneider is a good place to start. Savannah is tanker heaven on the East Coast. -
Chinatown, thanks for the advice, I respect the Salors very much. I had the opportunity to lead a PRT ( provincial Reconstruction team) in Afghanistan in 2009/2010. They are the most disciplined, motivated professionals I ever came across. My commander was a submarine commander. Good times then.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Most of the hazmat/tanker companies that hire new CDL grads, haul out of Savannah.
I've delivered chemicals to Savannah a few times. Unloaded at some little shack on a dirt road right by the water. I would watch the ships go by while unloading and always got the itch to get back to Asia. Yes, some good times in the military.
