Howdy y'all. My name is Steve and I'm thinking about a change of career into trucking. I've operated heavy machinery, wrangled horses, was a snowmobile guide, a sheriffs deputy, ex military, a cook, a roofer, concrete, carpenter, and many more. Haven't found my niche yet. Want to try my hand in trucking. I just sent out some applications to PAM and Roehl. Hope to hear from Roehl first. Hear their training program is pretty decent. I'm 36, from Michigan but live in Louisiana, am married with no kids. Can't wait to change things up again.

Louisiana is good with I-10 running coast-to-coast through the state.

Two guys posted yesterday they went through Celadon program and happy there doing refrigerated trucking. That company aslo has flatbed.

CTL Transportation has their own CDL school and runs lots of Florida/Texas.

As a new driver, you will make the most money with tankers due to better accessorial pays and quick turnarounds on loads.

Thanks a lot for the input about Celadon and CTL. I'll check them out. Tankers freak me out a bit. Not sure the pay is worth the risk. For me anyway. I'm not a fan of fire.

Most tanker freight isn't flammable. I pulled hazmat/tankers 48 states for years and never had a load requiring flammable placards. That's your call though; just want to let you know where the money is.
    Best wishes!

I've hauled a few loads of acid to a fish processing plant in Louisana down by the coast. Noticed dozens of Vietnamese women working there and asked about that. The guy told me they hire them because they're experts at repairing fishing nets; said they're quick and do an excellent job.

Oh really??? I guess ignorance isn't always bliss! I just assumed when a person speaks of running tankers, they are speaking of gasoline. I'm not well versed in any of this so I enjoy learning new things!

Tanker work is very interesting. I've hauled tanker loads of glue that's used on microwave popcorn bags; some type of green looking liquid used in wood processing mills where loggers unload logs just brought in from the forests; chemicals that go in soft drinks to Coke and Pepsi plants; acid to asphalt plants. The acid in asphalt works like this; in hot weather heavy traffic grooves asphalt and makes the pavement uneven, especially near traffic lights and stop signs. The acid make the asphalt return to it's orginal even surface in a matter of minutes. Those rough asphalt roads you see with permanent grooves didn't have the acid added when the asphalt was mixed. Sometimes you may haul chemicals to Fuji Film near Phoenix. All types of interesting places. I've hauled chemicals to a place in Florida that makes Summers Eve douche for women. Great money in tankers; $60K+ per year even for new drivers.

I was a hunter/killer for a lot of years. I lived in Wyoming and ran cattle on a ranch for 5 years so I'm not ignorant to the other side. After three years of eating rabbit food, I've come to find that we don't have to kill in order to survive. I'm bigger, faster and stronger then I ever was on a meat based diet. I was into bodybuilding for some time while eating meat and the biggest I got was 220lbs at 6'. When I went plant based, I reached 230 pretty quickly. Plus I just love Gods little babies. Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm calling PAM and Roehl this morning.
