Thanks for all the help my friends, it seems all I needed was an oil change.
Not too sure why it worked but it did, I change my filters regularly and my oil analysis came back clean.
It's a bummer that I had to pay $2500 and have 4 days off work but it's better news than an EGR problem ;0)

I'm in disbelief here given the symptoms!
Are these motors REALLY that sensitive to oil?
Btw, what type of oil have you been using?
Thanks -
Now I have a generic 10W40 mineral oil and all the symptoms have gone.
All I can say is what I have done and the result. I can't tell you why it works now ;0( -
Bizzare for sure.
I'm running conventional oil, Delvac 1300 15W-40 here. -

Yeah the new stuff is heading toward 0w-30,5w-30 and 10w-30 oils. Volvo specs 10w-30 for the D13 & D16 engines. I still use good old 15W-40 though.

Dave, what is the fix? Just a software update?
My D16 will see 220-235° EOT's on any hard pull, especially during warm weather. Cruise is 195-210° EOT's.
Never seems to every it though, just gets the coolant kinda hot and will cycle the fan on and off.
I did install a manual fan switch and will engage on a hard pull if desired ,which keeps the coolant and oil much much cooler! -
I don't want to lead you down the wrong path dependant on what code you have. There is an oil temperature thermostat in the oil filter base. There is a service program that addresses this exact issue. However the truck in I was doing had a reman engine new oil pump turbo etc. We replaced the thermostat on the old engine. Then found the main bearing issue. We swung the engine with a Volvo reman and transferred the oil filter base. The problem migrated to the new engine. I replaced the filter base and the road tested the truck with loaded trailer at 46k lbs up mountain pass in CA and no issue. Oil temp never above 231. Oil pressure at 68 psi. The service bulletin addresses trucks manufactured after Dec 2006 but seems to apply to a few prior.
