A little about me, i will be retiring from my current occupation in 24 months and trucking has been a passion for yrs. After my 1# year with the starter companies O/O is my objective. After many years of grinning i've done o.k with the finances, so my question is, a used low mileage Pete 587 along with a large down keeping payments at 1200 a month with a 20,000 maintenance account to start..... Or a relatives 2004 W/S 4900FA 265' wheelbase 72' sleeper Mercedes 4000 engine 875,000 well maintained for 19,500 . I'm no fool i know an inframe is in the very near future for maybe 11,500- 16,500 . Altogether 38,000 for The Star and 12,500 maintenance account to start ....... My O/O brotha's your infinite wisdom would been appreciated ... Thank you.

Has the head gasket been done yet ? Once the "upgrade" is done they are fairly good engines.

Personally I like an older truck, keep the older truck in top notch shape with maintenance and it should rarely let you down, the new trucks are a headache with all the emissions crap and sensors, plus if something happens such as a family emergency or that newer truck breaks down and needs a decent amount of shop time, them monthly truck payments don't stop, I would buy the older truck, bring it to a great mechanic and have him go over everything, fix what's needed and hit the road.

    This.
    OR......
Get the best of both worlds by searching out and finding a pre-emissions (Ibelieve pre-2006 or '07) Pete, and doing the same as far as going over, fixing/rebuilding, etc. Full disclosure- I am a Pete fanboy thru and thru.....BUT, aside from having the better looking and working truck (at least IMO) you will also have a more valuable trade-in should you decide to upgrade in the future, all things being equal.

Put a loaded trailer on them and drive them around first. There is no magic.
