So I am coming up to my 10th month in this industry and now I think it's time to start getting ready to take the next step in my career and go L/O. I have been browsing some of the other threads and find them quite interesting, but there are some specific things that I need answered.
What are some decent companies that have good freight in the western 11?
What type of pay package is better to go for, percentage or mileage?
What are some of the expenses that you didn't realize you will be paying? (like fuel taxes)
What are your fixed expenses costing you per week? please be specific.
Are there things that would help me cut costs other then fuel management?
What advice can you give on fuel management?
What companies offer a good L/O program.
And the biggest question, What types of trucks are the most dependable?
I am sure i'm missing some things and feel free to chime in. I am starting to get my nest egg built for those "what if" things that could happen in the beginning and I am also working on a budget for my personal costs that will need to be covered. I am looking at a couple companies that are based in the Oregon area already but I am open to looking at other companies. As far as the last question I have driven Freightliner Cascadia, Pete 578, and a Volvo. I am not a fan of the Volvo I drove because there was not very much room in the sleeper area to move around. My Pete is what I am driving now and it is an automatic, but I have noticed there are some issues with electrical popping up that have me concerned so I am unsure if I would want to lease one of these. I am open to it, but cautious.

Well - I've really got nothing positive to say here, so I guess I'll shut up.
Not very much room in the sleeper to move around, huh?
Most all of your questions have been answered here before.
Good luck.scottlav46, HalpinUout and icsheeple Thank this. -
Why not use your nest egg and buy a used truck?
HalpinUout and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
A real good place to start is on youtube. From what I found out if you can avoid a lease purchase with a trucking company you should. I know a few will say they are having no problem but not many.
Look for Jeffery L. on youtube he walks you through what he has done. He even let's you see his cost in a recent video. Lot of good info on you tube.
I'm just starting out too.I pick up my 1st load today.
I went with a full lease for a new truck little more expensive but I don't have to worry about any maintenance its all included. Even if a head light goes out they replace.
I built my business plan based on what Jeffery L shared on you tube. Getting a company to lease me a truck was the hard part. I went in with the business plan plus a letter of intent from the company I intended to hire on with. Plus I had already formed my own LLC company. Hope this help's

JTabor thank you for the advice and I will make sure to check that out when I get a chance.
77 I can't afford that lol I have a family to support.
Blair I realize that most of these questions have been answered but it would take me forever to find them and I don't know about you but I am way too busy for that. As far as not enough room in the volvo, it's much narrower then my Pete and I found myself feeling closterfobic and bumping into things.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Honestly,
if you think L/O is the next step................
I think you may be misinformed.
And if you did your homework before even considering the "next" step,
you'd already know the answer to all those questions.
But, I still wish you Good LuckGFBTrucking and rachi Thank this. -
Now you'll have a truck and a family to support.
If you lease a truck the truck comes before your
Family. The truck gets its money first everyweek
And your family gets the leftovers.
If there's no leftovers and there will be plenty of
Times that there aren't your family gets nothing.
Does your wife know this.
All the research in the world ain't gonna help you.
You said you don't have the time to read all the
Threads on here about leasing a truck.
That's a big mistake.
I'm gonna enjoy this crash and burn story just like
500 before you who thought they were smarter than
The million dollar accounts and lawyers at these companies
Who set these lease contracts.blairandgretchen, HalpinUout and rachi Thank this. -
Wait. That's my advice . All those questions you listed you should already have a good idea what the answers are.
I'm not saying don't do it.
I'm saying wait until you know what you are getting into .
The grass is only greener because of the excess of crap that is all over there.Western flyer and RERM Thank this. -
It's clear the guy doesn't know what he's up against with leasing a truck. He's got stars in his eyes and nothing is gonna stop him. When I first started 9 years ago I did the lease thing and almost went broke. The first check I got was negative, meaning I owed the company. After awhile I left and went as a company driver.
Western flyer and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Another lease op thread? Sheesh.
blairandgretchen Thanks this.
