ME-
28 years Old
Wife and 2 Kids
10 years active duty Air Force, very successful career so far but want to get the heck out.
Pulling $52,994 AFTER taxes and retirement contribution
Can live on $44k
No stranger to being gone from home a lot at short notice, wife just wants me home on weekends at least
Considering-
JB Hunt Intermodal job out of Kansas City or St Louis if available
Was TOLD min I could make is $52k
Also told it is possible to make upwards of $70k+ in that job
I don't really trust what a recruiter or website says, so I want to hear it from you all who are actually in the field working as drivers. On the good side, JB Hunt hires a lot of military and from what I have seen they get better reviews from employees than other companies. On the bad side, well, the list seems to be long like every other employer mostly depending on where you operate out of and the quality (or lack of) management/leadership.
Any/all insight would be greatly appreciated, I have a big decision to make over the next 10 months on whether to get out and am considering all my options. So, am I crazy or not?
Thanks

first, trust NO recruiter, think military on that...
JB Hunt intermodal should keep you very busy. i meet up with a JB driver nightly, he never gets slow.
what you earn, as you know, can be up to you.
you have nothing to lose by going with JB Hunt.
best of luck to you.
and thanks for the beer, i needed that......
now i want candy.DaneKirk Thanks this. -
Why do you want to leave the AF?
What is your AFSC? -
I kind of figured this is the response I would get. I have seen friends get it into their mind over the years that the "grass is always greener on the other side" and get screwed over big time. Even though I would LOVE to get out, I am not about to jump ship (or plane being Air Force) when I have a wife and kids to take care of. They will always be my first priority.
Still, I think it is important to consider ones options and ask around. I would appreciate more input, if just to pass information on to others who are thinking of the same or similar move. -
Ironically, poor leadership is the main reason I want to leave. There are a lot of changes taking place and little to no communication between HAF and all of us who accomplish the mission. They also constantly say we are their most important asset, but always seek to cut pay and benefits for active duty, reserve, and retirees. Just one of many reasons to get out, but once again not sure if I can find anything different on the outside. -
