What are the rules/regulations to be qualified to do an annual inpsection on a tractor-trailer? I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic and I'm wondering if its possible that he could do it? Thanks

You can do it yourself if you meet the qualifications. I do my own but I keep the sheets with the regs in it handy if anyone wants to see it. Just stop by the truckstop and get that JJ keller annual inspection packet. I think it has the requirements inside of it.

In Ontario you have to apply for a license. You have to have a shop with a concrete floor and big enough to get a truck and or trailer inside. You need to have at least one fully licensed mechanic that works and registered at the same address. There must be a complete set of mechanics tools. There has to be jacks that can lift the equipment and jack stands. You must have instruments to aim head lights, measure brake wear, (calipers, not a tape measure), and tread depth on tires. Must be able to measure wear on suspension and steering components, (dial indicator). You also need to have a torque wrench rated high enough to torque wheels, (for example a 3/4" Snap On torque wrench QD4R600 $765). Your shop gets inspected to make sure you have everything before you get a license. The license is either 50 or $100. To register a mechanic is another $14, I think, then you have to order and pay for a book of stickers, 10 for $25. The licensee has to keep all inspection reports and records that may be review at any time if audited. Sound cool?

Sounds like too much B.S. to live in Canada.

hah, in Ukraine annual inspection is legal in certified workshop with drum brake tester, suspention play tester, aligning test, computer diagnostics (engine and ABS and EBS systems). They store all data and send it by internet to Ukrainian DOT server. They check all lamps, its aligning and send photos to DOT server. It is over 2 hours job.

Yep, I'm pretty sure there is more to it than just getting a pamphlet from the truck-stop and filling out a form. No B.S.!

Go to local truck stop and pay a few bucks for the paperwork and glue to side of truck. Defeats the purpose of the inspection? Im 100% positive the DOT isnt onto this. Work for awhile til some DOT guy decides today is the day to go over your paperwork with a fine tooth comb, etc. Sometimes it is better to take the long way and do it right, imo.
