So far what I've found on the web suggests APUs and Inframes would be depreciated in 5 years, but that doesn't seem right considering they improve a 3-year asset? Does anyone know for sure?

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. 3 years would have been just about ideal though.

Ask your accountant, sometimes a 179 is worse than a straight depreciation. He/She can explain the difference.

You can elect to take part as 179, depreciate the rest. Lots of flexibility. I don't recall if the deferred 179 deductions are general or just farm related, but we use that rule occasionally.

Depreciate an inframe? Write the whole thing off. Next year something else big will break.

I understand depreciating the APU, but why would you depreciate an inframe? Couldn't that just be fully written off in the current tax year it was done as maintenance?

The way it was explained to me was that the inframe increases the value of the truck. Maintenance just keeps the truck going down the road.

Our accountant told us that it (the motor) is an asset, just like the truck. Thus depreciable.
