Get your credit score up to around 700 and buy your own truck.

No, I'm buying my own truck...Ram 3500, but then is it best to lease onto a company like Landstar, or?

Where are you located? I would find a few local brokers and ask them who they call for hotshot and LTL in the area. They will usually have a short list of go-to companies. Once you have the list, contact them and see if they need drivers.

In El Paso, I was running for a guy, had my own authority (all his drivers are independent) and could either call him for a backhaul or find one myself. The benefit of finding one myself was I got 100% of the load pay off the board. All runs dispatched by him were subject to a 25% cut. It worked out pretty well, since he was the first call for a LOT of LTL freight out of ELP and could keep the wheels turning, usually with light loads requiring enclosed transport.

More than a dispatcher. He also provided the trailers for the drivers (so we always had the right one for the job, whether enclosed, open, gooseneck, 2-car hauler, etc), and a shop for maintenance. He used to pay fuel, but when the prices spiked a decade ago, he restructured that out of the settlements (it was 50%+fuel) and paid all FSC to the drivers.
