Seems that Ground Plane, or lack of, seems to be the issue, so for my own knowledge I tried to find a good working definition to use, "A ground plane for a CB antenna is the metal surface required below the antenna. The metal surface enables the signal generated when transmitting to reflect off the surface and travel into the atmosphere" , understood but a couple of questions. First, if the signal radiated goes down towards the ground then why has it always been recomended to have at least 2/3 of the antenna above the cab and make sure the coil is not too close to the cab? Next if signal radiates down what difference does it make if antenna is vertical, horizontal, or angled somewhere in between ? And finally if some of us ( Volvo, Mike, myself, and many others ) are transmitting 10+ miles and have acheived a decent swr there must be some ground plane around or that wouldnt be the case.
