A few years ago, the 12 or so local guys who drive for the Goodwill warehouse signed cards with the Teamsters. Before the Teamsters, they were making about $8.50 an hour, with Goodwill supplied benefits and 401(k).
After joining Teamsters, they made $8.50 an hour, with Goodwill supplied benefits, and 401(k). The only change I heard about was now they paid 2 hrs wages every month to Teamsters. I don't believe it was an improvement.

A union is only as good as it's members and some are crap but more times than not they bring good changes if in nothing more than pay.
Actually working on getting in a union company near me.....
90% of the transportation industry is being abused.
You cannot tell me the rates at most places are worth a crap.
As to the auto industry going to pot here in America....you can thank Nafta for much of that.

Yeah, NAFTA is really killing those non-union auto plants in the southeast! ;)

Ask the Hostess workers who lost their jobs because a union representing 1/3 of them caused Hostess to shut down if NAFTA cost them their jobs?

Nafta started killing all kinds of jobs before the ink was even dry. They were tripping over themselves to go build in China and Mexico....among other places.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Unions were founded based on Socialist and Marxist principles.

In fact Samuel Gompers was an admitted Marxist.

I happen to believe in capitalism and a meritocracy, not Socialism/Marxism.

I agree in some respect to that but early American and independent ones were not. Now I am not talking about the big lobbyist ones in DC either. No one would even need unions if these companies paid decent as they once did.

Not sure what "early American" labor unions you're talking about because Samuel Gompers founded the AFL, which later became the AFL-CIO, in 1886.

Not sure what unions were earlier than that in America.

And I bet you'd be hard pressed to find a modern union that doesn't have lobbyists. If they don't, they're not a very good union, as that's a big part of what they do, lobby on behalf of their members.
