So I've been reading through some of the threads on how hot the traditional hazmat suit is during the summer, and I was wondering if there were any cooler options available? Of course, I would buy it if necessary, even if it costs some decent money. I think here in Savannah it may be a necessity.

Ughhhh, I hated those things

Man if there isn't, maybe you could invent one. Possibly with some type of controlled refrigerant flowing through it?

They make cooling vests that you can wear inside the suit. It does help.
Canned Spam Thanks this. -
I tried that for 2 weeks and was going
" Oh hell no."
The one I had was kinda pvc like and very stiff.
They had some that were red in color that the guys that had been there for years had, that I was told were much cooler, but $1,000 a pop. -

Specifically, the Nomex one. Sorry, I don't know the cost - they were issued as part of our gear.
There is a company that makes a shirt with tubes sewn into it that circulates cold water. Don't know how well it works. More here:

This outfit uses CO2:

Someone brought up a good point the other day. What happens if you get hurt wearing your suit and not the one the company supplied?

ansell sawyer sells the red suits that are comfortable to wear but you're going to spend $500+ for the set and they don't protect against all chemicals.

@KMG365 Thanks for posting that. I'm long past needing it now, of course, but any of that would have been a tremendous help under turnouts down in California's Imperial Valley, or the desert searches in Death Valley. There was many a time I'd shed the gun belt, grab the water can and douse myself with ice water, after a search or other type of incident that kept us out in the heat for hours.
KMG365 Thanks this. -
The worst for me was wearing full turnout in the summer during extrication with Hurst tools and the like.Last edited: Feb 10, 2016
