hey guys, in the market for a new truck. Looking for a Volvo and not sure if I should go for Volvo or cummins. I really like the I shift but I have heard lots of bad things about Volvo engines and not sure how the 2011-2013 models are. Also, how are the newer cummins engines? If anyone has any info or suggestions. Please let me know. I'm looking for something under 500k miles.
D13 or ISX15

I tend to be a Volvo motor man because all my trucks have been d13. But cummins seem to do a little better. Since you're buying used it'll really depend on the past maintenance and drivers. One thing I highly suggest is a dyno

thanks man, what year were your d13 and how did you like them? any down time on them such as major breakdowns? that is my main concern

I think the D13/iShift is a better combo. I see more of the red engine Cummins powered Volvos on the side of the road. The D13 is also used in marine applications up to an incredible 900hp.

I would go with the Volvo engine

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it. I think people have worried me too much in the past about the Volvo engines that it just made me think all of their engines are bad. Is there a specific year that is better than the other? Also, how reliable is the Ishift?

I shift is very reliable if properl;y maintained and nothing stupid happens to mess it up like driving with the airbags down or getting towed without removing driveline. As far as D13 goes 08 to 10 i wouldn't take them if someone gave them to me for free anything after that has issues like every other truck but if properly maintained they're pretty good.

I am actually thinking of getting an 11 or 12, Probaby around 425-450 horsepower, my other option is a 400HP Cummins ISX, which for some reason i am really hesitant on.

I've had both, IMHO flip a coin. Stupid things with ISX, water pumps, compressor, EGR valve of course, transfer pump, thermostats. D13, injectors, 3 EGR coolers, harness, doser valves, sensors etc... I was CAT for 30 years so I'm not a big fan of either, I think they've both got issues.

So the d13 has better reviews. Is the 2013 better than the 2012? Also, any known problems I should look out for? Thanks!
